Crews Flying For Another Airline

Thu Jan 23, 2003 7:15 pm

How often do crews (cockpit and cabin) get the opportunity to fly for another airline on a definite contract, lease, secondment, training purposes etc?

With AirMalta as Cabin Crew I had the opportunity to fly for a month with AirHolland as Purser. Other cabin crew were called to fly BA thru FlightLine, a leasing company. Our pilots do it more often and are currently flying for Air New Zealand and Skynet.

A bunch of Air 2000 757/767 flightdeck crew were on secondment to JMC and Air Seychelles post Sept-11th when there was a downturn in the market, but I understand they have all now returned.

Training-wise I hear the bmi British Midland A320 crews who were trained to fly the A330 flew line experience flights with Monarch for several months prior to the first delivery of the bmi A330s.

In lease terms the possibilities are almost endless. At present there are bmi crews (pilot and cabin) flying South African Airways A330 on the winter lease, Britannia / My Travel 767 crews on the Hadj contract with Garuda based in Singapore for 3 months... etc...

At the moment in Britannia we are busy with some longhaul charters for P&O Cruises / Royal Caribbean flying 767s to Florida, the Caribbean and South America which is different to the normal course of duty and makes life a bit more interesting for us. Similarly the lapland "santa flight" charters we do to Norway / Finland in November and December are good fun.
I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...

In the days of the Atlantic Excellence (SR/SN/OS/DL), there was always a DL flight att. on the daily code-share flight VIE-JFK (op. by OS). And I think they even had flight att. of all three airlines (OS, SR, DL) on the VIE-GVA-WAS flight. (also op. by OS)
