UAL: Does Channel 9 Still Work?

Sat Jan 25, 2003 3:32 pm

I've kinda been out of the loop for a while as far as flying United goes. Does UA still offer Channel 9 to their passengers or did they get rid of it as a result of their restructuring?

Flew UA last week...Channel 9 is still there. Just remind the captain to turn it on when you pass by during boarding because sometimes it is off at the captain discretion.

Yep. Both my UA flights last weekend featured channel 9. The captain on my return flight to DEN mentioned that it was available at least 3 times before we took off.

I've only flown a UA flight twice in the last 2 years where it wasn't on. The first one was a 737 flight where the captain didn't want it on. The other was a 747 flight that the IE was broken.

I noticed last week that I was 1 of 2 people on a full 737-300 that was listening to channel 9 or other IE. Other flights recently I've been the only person listening to it. No one else in the cable had any headphones on. It seems that most people just don't care about or can't understand it. That's probably why other airlines won't do anything similiar. It seems there's just no interest in it from the flying public.

I like it when the Captain announces that it's on. When I flew LAS-IAD in Oct on a UA 757 it was on. Love listening to it ! I'm flying UA next Sunday down to MIA and I hope it's on  Big grin

When flying UA this past thanksgiving DFW-DEN-LAX and LAX-DFW, the flight crew seem to go out of their way to mention that Channel 9 was available. They even told the passengers what our call sign would be during the flight.

It was my first UA flight in several years, and I don't remember the crews advertising back then the fact that passengers could listen to ATC transmissions.

Last sunday night I had the best channel 9 experience I have every had. It was a short hop from ORD-MSP, but the captian had both ATC on channel 9 and the Raiders-Titans game on. In the middle of a play you would hear ATC commands to aircraft. The Captian had WWL AM870 from New Orleans which was carrying the game. I have had the captians turn on an AM station instead of channel 9 when a big game was on and they think there is enough interest from the passengers to listen to it, but never had both on at the same time. Kind of nice though.

As for other airlines. The only one I ever remember doing this was AA on their DC-10, they would show you the view from the cockpit as you were taking off and landing. This was back in the early 80's. Right now no other airlines offer a channel 9 experience.

I can remember listening to Channel 9 way back in 1993, on a 4 segment transcon on UA, I can clearly remember being in a widebody aircraft from PHL-SFO (it turned out to be a 762), and hearing a controller issue some instruction for a Delta a/c...I have a weird memory lol...

Its most fun in foreign countries, at least for me.

The people at Scottish ATC are quite interesting to listen to.  Smile

Its great when Atc points out other traffic. I was flyign ORD SEA once and ATC alerted our crew of a NW 747 at 12 oclock opposite direction at fl350 (we were at fl370). So it looked out the window and there it wizzed by. It was amazing!

Took the UAL redeye from Seattle to JFK last summer. We must have been the only one in the air between the coast and Denver that early in the morning. I heard the flight deck ask ATC for a radio check just to see if it was working. (I can not sleep on the plane)
