BA Captain Held Back Due To Drinking

Sun Jan 26, 2003 7:26 am

I came over this http://www.vg.no/pub/vgart.hbs?artid=8550805 (yes, I know its in Norwegian) earlier this evening, and i shall try to pick out the most interesting/important.

This article deals with the fact that a British Airways captain who was due to fly BA's 8:30 depature from ARN (Stockholm) home to UK, was stopped by security due to suspicion about him beeing intoxiated.
The pasengers had to wait for about 3 hrs, before BA had a new captain ready.

The article ends with telling about how 11 BA pilots were fired after a TV documentary focusing on their on duty drinking.

Yes folks, thats it

I don't get what is with these pilots. I come from a large family of people in all parts of the aviation career, and they never drink/drank while on duty. I guess the times have changed since they were in the business, though.

The 11 that were sacked were mostly LGW based pilots and crew, this was around 2-3 years ago IIRC.

Interestingly, this mornings Daily Mail reports that he was seen swaying as he was walking towards his aircraft, so was reported. Yet later on in the article, he was said to have 1/4 the alcohol in his blood stream that is the legal drink/drive limit in the UK.

Now, I'm not condoning him at all, as he knew the rules, no alcohol in the 8 hours previous, and in moderation in the 24 hours previous. But to be "swaying" seems a bit strange to me. This smacks of being shopped.

According to the information published a couple of days ago in the Swedish paper Dagens Nyheter, police officers were called after ground staff considered the pilot "acted" strangely and smelled of alcohol. Always according to that paper, a prosecutor was considering pressing charges against the pilot and BA has suspended him from service until the investigations is closed.
It was a short piece of news, very neutral, and I got the impression there was no doubt the pilot was drunk (or not completely recovered after being drunk the night before).

not being an expert on these things , but after reading the many replies to this subject on PPrune web site, it would appear that the breath test result were very very small. I would recommend people to read the pprune replies

I saw this on the swedish news on television and was very confused.
They said according to the breathalyzer test he had 0.2 promille alcohol
in his blood. If I'm not mistaken that is a can of beer+.
If he was making a drunk impression on anyone after having one and a
half can of beer I think he was either sick or had almoast never drunk
alcohol before. A male person don't "appear drunk" after one and a half
beer.
