FedEx A310 At OMA Right Now!?

Sun Jan 26, 2003 12:09 pm

I just got back from picking my mom up at the airport, Eppley Airfield in Omaha, NE, and as I was driving by the cargo terminal, I saw a FED EX A310. No Joke! What is a jumbo like an a A310 doing at a puny airport like Omaha?

It's nothing unusual.

Colorado Springs gets FedEx DC-10s and MD-10s sometimes.

BA is correct... Nothing unusual.

Cargo aircraft will vary depending on loads.

For the x-mas season BIL got the following in one day on numerous occasions:
UPS: MD-11, (2) A300, (1) 757, (1) 727, (1) DC-8
Express.net: 727
..as well as the stuff that didn't change like Great Lakes, Fedex, Corporate Air, Alpine Aviation, Ameriflight, etc....

OMA is not a puny airport! Midwest Express Hub, Aircraft operations: avg 394/day to name a few. Also was in About Scmidt movie!

thanks

Even at DSM I've seen UPS A300s and 767s.

I always like to see big planes in smaller airports. It makes the plane look so much bigger.

Regarding what AA61hvy said, that is so true. Those Horizon Air DHC-8's look like mosquitos running around the ramp in seattle, but if you see one in butte, they look huge.

Ever since FedEx got the big Postal Service contract in summer 2001, a lot more medium-size airports are seeing heavies. ROC has two daily FedEx A310's now, for instance.

And OMA is indeed not puny....it's a thriving medium-size airport, especially thanks to Southwest.

That XMas lineup at BIL is impressive. Is BIL UPS's only station in Montana? UPS has been known to choose one or two airports in a region and stiff everybody else....for instance, they've flown to BUF and SYR for years, but they don't fly to ROC. Never mind that ROC is a bigger cargo market than BUF or SYR, and that other cargo carriers thrive there, our UPS cargo gets trucked down the Thruway to our neighbors' airports.

I apologize, I shouldn't be knocking my home airport. I hope I see more of those A310s.

FedEx has been operating A310s in and out of OMA since Nov so its still kind of a new thing. In Nov and Dec it saw a A300 flight once a week, but this month they are splitting duties between 727s and A310s. It is definitely nice to see wide-bodies in OMA. They had to do some concrete reinforcement on Cargo Ramp A to allow for the extra weight.

And Omaha is hardly puny. There is always a project going on. Rwy 14L/32R was recently expanded to 7020' along with new taxiways. This allows for air carriers to use all 3 runways at the airport now. 32R is getting a CAT IIIC ILS this year. A new coporate hangar is scheduled to begin its construction soon as Garret Aviation has plans in the works for a hangar of their own capable of housing multiple 737 size aircraft. A new $3.2 million dollar Communications Center is opening next month with state-of-the-art communications and security equipment. OMA has 20 gates, yet 26 airline aircraft remain over night. While its no O'Hare, OMA is doing pretty good for medium size airport.

FedEx flies A310s into OMA all the time, whats the mystery? As other have pointed out, 4M passengers, an airport that used to receive DC-8s, DC-10s, and L-1011s on a regular basis is no stranger to large aircraft. In fact, do a search in the photo database, there are quite a few photos of large aircraft at OMA.

Thank you everyone. Hoopefully, I can get out there more often with a camera and get some good shots of these big beauties.

BTW, Dash 80, do you know if there are any terminal construction/expansion plans in the works for Eppley?

Heavies are no biggie at MHT. We get a few FedEx and UPS A300s daily, with UPS sending in 757/767s and FedEx having a few A310s too. The cargo ops are the only ones pretty much with a "heavy" aircraft; United has the lone pax heavy with a daily 757 to ORD.

Jim,

I'm not exactly sure but I think you are right about BIL getting most of the UPS traffic. It seems like each city gets something different, for example, BIL only gets those little F-27s from Fedex while Great Falls gets Fedex A310s... But I don't think Great Falls gets any UPS stuff larger then a Metro (could be wrong however).

Anyone from UPS around to tell us more? (Don?  Smile)

BTW, Dash 80, do you know if there are any terminal construction/expansion plans in the works for Eppley?

A plan has been in the works for a new terminal at OMA for quite some time now. The design would create a long linear concourse that would start at the current north satellite and end at the current employee parking lot. It would allow for 35-40 gates. I am unsure as to amount of increased capacity it would create. Prior to Sept 11th, it looked like it would happen within the next 5-7 years, but now with enplanements down, it'll probably be after 10 years. The Airport Authority Board doesn't want to commit to anything until they see a large increase in operations. The current management is trying to attract Alaska Airlines, AirTran, and even JetBlue to help with this increase. I personally believe that a new terminal is the crowning achievement the current director is looking for before he retires.

Besides the other things I mentioned earlier I forgot to say they are looking to expand the freight forwarding area (which may mean more FedEx widebodies Smile) and put another 1000' on the approach end of 14L.

I believe the 310 is there on most weekdays.

Eppley used to receive DC-10 service from Chicago as late as the mid-80's....and DC-8-61's from LAX, DEN, and ORD.

747 Husker charters to the Hula bowl were also the norm...although I image they had to make an intermediate stop somewhere....

Actually, Omaha received UAL DC-10s up until 1997 (from DEN). In the 70s and 80s, UAL operated DC-10s, DC-8s, and 762s, with service to LAX, DEN, and ORD. EAL also used an L-1011 for a few years ATL-OMA-PDX. TWA (I believe) used L-1011s for awhile, at least I saw them at Eppley quite often in the mid-80s.

Does anybody think any other big birds will come to Eppley in the future?
