N880EP To Graceland,how,when?

Tue Jan 28, 2003 8:34 am

I was looking thru some pics and found this pic of 'The Lisa Marie',Elvis' CV880. I was wondering if anyone had any info on how they got it from the airport to Graceland?

I was there in '96 , but didn't get to tour her. I want to go back!
I was also wondering who operated it first. I remember reading that it was bought for only $1 mil in 1975 . Obviously Elvis didn't get to use it but for 2 years.
There's another pic in here of her in MIA in '79 in what looks like storage.

I toured it back in '92 or '93. I think they said they ripped the wings off and trucked it in.

The wings were reattached with large steel plates "sandwiched" on the top and bottom of the wings.

I'm with Mls515, as I also seem to remember either reading about or seeing a video snippet about the move.

I vaguely recall the actual move was in the 1980s, but I can't recall anything more specific than that.

If you scroll down to the last 880 shot (just before the pink Caddy) you'll notice that the 880 is wingless, and that there's an engine on a cart. Presumably, this was sometime between the move, and the exhibit opening, so maybe the photographer can recall more exactly...

It was not far at all from the airport. Both are south of downtown. It seems like it was not even two miles to Graceland.

N880EP was built for Delta. And yes, unlike HB-ICC at the Swiss Transport Museum, She'll never fly again.....

Well, this is stirring up some dead embers.... When I was a teenager, circa mid-sixties, I got a model of a DL CV880 -- this was before I had ever seen a Delta plane -- it's reg was N880??. Can't remember the suffix, but the N880 is for sure.

I remember going to MEM on vacation with my family back in 1983 and seeing the Lisa Marie then, so it's been there at least 20 years. I concur with what a few people here have already said about how they got the plane there. I remember seeing on TV or a tape somewhere that they did remove the wings. As to how they put them back on, I do not know. I guess the "metal plate" explanation is feasible. Since it was intended to be a display there really would be no point in reassembling everything by the manuals.
Also, about the plane still being registered, thats not all that unusual. At the A & P school I attended we had a cessna 150 body with no wings and a Bell 222 that had been involved in some sort of accident years ago. It was just a shell with landing gear. I checked the reg #'s of both and they both still show up as registered. Now, if there is any legal reason why, I do not know, anyone else know??

I remember working in Maintenance for Northeastern International Airways at FLL in the mid 80's and Lisa Marie was parked outside our offices all the time. As I recall, someone broke into it one night and stripped out the cockpit instruments but left the interior alone (obviously, not an Elvis fan or one who knew what the airplane represented).

I toured the Lisa Marie in 1991...its pretty impressive to have an intact CV-880 around these days!

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Does anyone know exactly when it was moved from Ft Lauderdale to Gracelands?

I remember seeing it at FLL in January 1982, but if I recall it was gone when I next went to FLL in May 1983.

In the "boarding area" before you walk out to the planes, they show a video that shows the plane being towed down Elvis P. boulevard. They also had to remove a portion of the tail to clear the street lights. There were thousands of people lined up and down the street when they moved it.
