Reverse Codesharing Practice

In the topic below, regarding Virgin Atlantic's 3rd weekly frequency to Delhi, it refers to the specific legal situation requiring VS reverse-codeshare with Air India in order to operate this route. I'm curious how common this practice is?

American Airlines does it with all American Connection flights.
