Delta 747 Questions

Thu Jan 30, 2003 6:30 am

I photographed a Polar 747 and in researching the reg # I found out that it is a former Delta plane!!! That leads me to some questions....

How many 747s did Delta once own? Why did they get rid of them - what did they replace them with, the 767??

I don't know how many they had, but they got rid of thiers for the same reason American did. Too big, too costly. Delta replaced thier 747's with something that fit them a lot better. The L-1011.
I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

Delta Airlines had 5 747-100s at one point : N9896, N9897, N9898, N9899, and N9900. 2 are parked, 2 are with Polar Air Cargo, and 1 is with Kalitta.

Delta inauguarted 747 service in October 1970. They flew ATL-DFW-LAS, ATL-SFO, ATL-LAX and operated the interchange with PAN AM on ATL-IAD-LHR.
They were removed from the fleet in April 1977 and sold to Flying Tigers. Delta decided to reduce their fleet down to the DC-9-30, 727-200, DC-8-61, and L-1011. The first 767 did not arrive until 1982 and the DC-8s were retired in 1989, the DC-9-30s went away in Dec 1992.
