DL Shuttle Changes

Fri Jan 31, 2003 8:35 am

From DAL employee website

DL Shuttle moving from 737-800s to 737Gs 3:15 p.m. 1/23/03
On Jan. 21, a new Delta Shuttle business model was introduced to achieve and sustain profitability. The four key strategies of the model include adjusting capacity to demand, aligning the product with fares paid, continuing to reinforce DLS??? brand identity, and seizing opportunities to reclaim premium fares. As part of the new business model, beginning Friday, the 120-seat 737-300s will be transitioned into service in place of the current 737-800s. The 737-300s will be reconfigured to include the existing premium product, including leather seats and industry-leading seat width and pitch. The current 737-800s will be re-deployed to markets where they can be better used. DLS operations will continue to provide quality service geared toward the business travelers in the New York, Boston and Washington, D.C. markets.

There was a post about this not too long ago, stating Delta would replace the 738's with 733's on the shuttle routes due to a decrease in demand and the 738's would be rotated back into mainline service.

Will the 733s be fitted with the nifty video screens that fold down from the overhead panel? (Shuttle 738s had these)

Delta has something like 36 737-300's, many of them getting long in the tooth as I believe they were all acquired from Western Airlines (or most of them any-way, when Western was bought in the mid 1980's). It makes sense to move the -800's to mainline services. There are too many shuttle seats chasing too few customers and the 800's, with their longer range and high capacity seat configurations, are better used elsewhere in the Delta system.

I would not be surprised if US Airways removes the A320/A319's dedicated to shuttle operations and replaces them with 737-300's and -400's.
