Emergency Landing At DET Yesterday

Sun Feb 02, 2003 6:08 am

Does anyone know about the emergency landing at DET- Detroit City Airport yesterday?

I was told this second hand and it sounded like a major airliner landed there with an engine problem. It must have been a major enough problem that it couldn't fly to DTW.

It was not any major airline...a private plane lost an engine after it caught on fire...no injuries the plane landed fine.

Ditto on it not being a major airline; DET's runway is too short and too narrow even for "normal" airline ops, let alone ABnormal ones...

I wouldn't say that- it could easily land a lot of a/c if there was an emergency, remember Pro Air flew 737-400s out of there and Southwest used to fly there a decade ago.

Yep, they did, but they flew "normally in/out of DET. In fact, SWA dumped DET because of the city's failure to extend/widen 15-33.

Personally, I can assure you that had I an inbound DET flight with an emergency, I'd dismiss DET's 5,090' by 100' runway and divert the flight to the 9,000' by 150' runway at nearby Selfridge (MTC), or any of DTW's multiple runways. Better ARFF at DTW too...

Selfridge was closed last summer because they were reconstructing the runway, don't know if they are finished yet.

They couldn't extend DET's runways, there is a cemetary on each end.

Selfridge reopened back in the fall.
