IAH VS. DFW

Tue Dec 22, 1998 3:25 am

HELLO EVERYBODY I HOPE YOUR HOLIDAYS ARE GOING WELL. I HAVE A QUESTION. WHICH AIRPORT DO YOU THINK WILL HAVE A BRIGHTER FUTURE? HOUSTON INTERCONTINENTAL OR DALLAS/FT. WORTH. HOUSTON HAS MORE EUROPEAN AIRLINES HAS EXCELLENT SERVICE TO LATIN AMERICA AND AN EXPANDING ASIAN ROUTE NETWORK. ALSO THE HOME AIRLINE CONTINENTAL IS GROWING AND HAS LOTS OF POTENTIAL. ON THE OTHER HAND DALLAS IS MUCH BUSSIER HAS MORE DOMESTIC AIRLINES AND IS GOING TO HAVE NEW SERVICE ON JAL TO TOKYO. DALLAS IS ALSO CHOSEN MORE OFTEN FOR NEW ROUTES THAN HOUSTON. THEIR HOME AIRLINE AMERICAN IS MAKING LOTS OF PROFITS. WHAT AIRPORT DO YOU ALL THINK WILL HAVE A BRIGHTER FUTURE. AS BOTH AIRPORTS ARE EXCELLENT AND WILL BOTH PROSPER. I APPRECIATE ALL OPINIONS

Being in Houston, I would hope IAH. But the hard reality is DFW will continue to outshine its neighbor to the south for a number of reasons.

1) The airport is HUGE, maybe twice the size of IAH. How many runways does DFW now sport, 6 or so?

2) The NW/CO alliance may also some effect on IAH in the next couple of years.

3) DFW is better positioned to be a hub. IAH is a hub only because CO wants it to be. Its really not a natural hub like DFW, DIA, STL or ORD. If CO weren't based here I really don't think another airline would have a hub at IAH, maybe a lot of flights, but not a hub.

Just my thoughts

Go DFW. You are right about CO being the only good reason for Houston
being so prominent as a airport. But IAH still gets a lot more Eurpean
airlines (again because of the inability of some airlines like KLM and
AIR France to fly into DFW - where I am told that AA has
exclusive rights to some European routes like Amsterdam and Paris -
this is not to say that these European airlines do not want IAH).
However DFW will continue to see expanision on the Asian side.
JAL will start coming in March, and I hope more will follow. I heard
that Malysia and Singapore are doing feasibility studies on expansion
into Central US (primarily DFW). Yes DFW is HUGE - the 2d busiest in
the world! 5 runways currently in use and a 6th that is nearing completion.
I've flown on 9V-SPK.

I think DFW has a brighter future just because they have more domestic routes.

Although I have only flown to either one a few times (I work from UA, not a lot of flights down there) and I definatly think that Dalls/ Ft. Worth has more potential. When I walk through ORD, I see a lot more flights headed there than IAH. This is not the most acurate basis for an answer, but this is how I feel. The only objection I can possible see, is that IAH has Continental, which I guess is a rapidly growing airline with more wide-body aircraft then AA. Enjoy the holidays too!

I think IAH will do alot better, I lived in Houston for 3/4 of my life, and the people always wanted the airport expanded......

I read on some site that IAH MIGHT be getting two new runways......
