I think I'd speak on behalf of the Cathay Pacific fan club here, I flew them before and boy were they ever great. I was on two Air Canada flights prior to my cathay one and the difference is large, I also was disscussing Cathay vs BA at the Avaition Muesum out here and Cathay was voted as number one over BA, as hard as the fight went every time BA made a move Cathay responded with fast execution of its definition of passenger service. Even though my name is virgin 747 I'm Cathay Pacific by the heart.

CX is an OK airline - nothing much to bicker about, but then nothing much to write home about either. I found the legroom a tad wanting, on the B747-400 that I flew on the LAX-HKG sector. The food was not bad.

As regards Chep Lak Kok, let me just say this - It cant hold a spent candle to Kai Tak. In fact the only reason I went to Hong Kong was to take pictures of that amazing 47 degree bank on finals to Rwy 13.

Its a terrible shame that this greatest and most spectacular of airports will soon be converted into yet another antiseptic characterless shopping mall.

Cathay is the best airline in the entire world, ever. Does that convey the message effectively?

Great fleet (I'm usually an Airbus fan, but love those 773s!), great service, great crews (flight and cabin) and generally, an airline that makes the flight a real part of a holiday, not just something to endure.

There is, however, one point that bothers me. If you go to the CX website, you'll see an All Asia internet fare available, but only to US and American continent residents, not people - however loyal - who live in Europe. And it's such a great deal. The thought of flying all around Asia with CX for up to a month is enough to make me want to fly to the US just to avail of it!

As for CLK, nice airport, in fairness, but it will always be in the shadow of its forerunner, for which there is no (and is never likely to be any, unfortunately) equal. It's funny, I can still picture the airport, with the yellowish floor tiles and getting into the lift for the 7th floor of the car park and the rush of adrenalin as I watch a plane swoop in for finals. The place dreams were made of. Stop me, someone, before the tears flow!

Cathay Pacific is a good airline. I really like their fleet of 747's. Will they fly to YWG?

I would think Cathay is quite a good airline , good cabin crew , okay food , quite small legroom though , good entertainment system ( if it had been consistant enough on all flights ) , CLK airport's good!!

You can tell from my name how I feel about Cathay Pacific. Kai Tak forever!!! I must admit though that Chek Lap Kok is growing on me. All that new equipment needed a new home? ) Just for the fun of it here is some info on the fleet.

19 747-400s
4 777-200s
7 777-300s
11 A340-300s
13 A330-300s

Currently there are only 11 A340-300s in the fleet but 3 aircraft are being leased from Air China or China Air. All aircraft listed above are their "pax" fleet. Supposedly Cathay is looking into a 747-400 replacement or complimenter. Fortunately I haven't heard anything about this for a while now. I would hate to see the 747-400 leave the fleet. Maybe an order for the 747NG?

Overall, I give them a B.

Flew aboard their service from HKG-YVR-JFK (CX888) just over a week ago. There are high points and not so high ones that I noted durign the trip. It was quite long of course, I must say the seats were quite cramped (I'm 6'1") and it wasnt easy. Two passengers almost got into fisticuffs due to the very cramped nature of things. FA's are extremely overworked -no time to converse with passengers I noted, along with little to no room to get up and stretch your feet aloft. The galley configurations on their 744s occupy center areas -and- next to the doors which makes it next to impossible to stand up after a meal is served. Duty free sales werent offered -at all- onboard, the inflight entertainment was so-so; no where near as eleborate as Singapore's KrisWorld. Cabin air was simply atrocious I felt, never seen such dry air on a TransPacific flight as this one. Zero -minus- crying all around you by the time we were an hour out of YVR, on a more positive note I thoroughly enjoyed DragonAir, it's regional affiliate though.

I believe I may change our tickets back to Taiwan with SIA instead though.
CX is a great airline, but it needs some work on some comfort areas I believe.
It's better than any US carrier I've flown across the Pacific of course, but I was a bit taken aback when I found the regional carrier seemed to be better than the mainline carrier it fed, stuck me a bit odd. Singapore and Malaysia Airlines I found to be much better in terms of comfort, amenity and other factors like cabin comfort, air, etc.

CX's piloting was superb of course.

On the ground, one thing I did -not- like was the -chaotic- manner they change gates at CLK Airport without notice. This is a major pain in the @ss. We were assembled at Gate 4 for the departure, then without an announcement, changed to Gate 6, only on the departure board -behind- Gate 4, by pure luck I walked back to check a magazine outlet when I looked around and noticed our gate had been changed. Yet, the flight number that was originally posted at the gate..disappeared. Gate 6 turns out to be in the basement.

The vocal announcement noting the change were only announced around 25 minutes prior to gate boarding time it appeared. We walked to our gate and waited for a spell until -finally- the gate change was announced, you should have seen the throng of people coming down the stairs. (LOL!)

Some folks werent too happy about that, the moving walkways at CLK only go -one direction- outbound to the gates in the Gate 4 area, so it was a bit of a walk back to the central atrium area, then down the stairs.
