Overall, I give them a B.
Flew aboard their service from HKG-YVR-JFK (CX888) just over a week ago. There are high points and not so high ones that I noted durign the trip. It was quite long of course, I must say the seats were quite cramped (I'm 6'1") and it wasnt easy. Two passengers almost got into fisticuffs due to the very cramped nature of things. FA's are extremely overworked -no time to converse with passengers I noted, along with little to no room to get up and stretch your feet aloft. The galley configurations on their 744s occupy center areas -and- next to the doors which makes it next to impossible to stand up after a meal is served. Duty free sales werent offered -at all- onboard, the inflight entertainment was so-so; no where near as eleborate as Singapore's KrisWorld. Cabin air was simply atrocious I felt, never seen such dry air on a TransPacific flight as this one. Zero -minus- humidity..kids crying all around you by the time we were an hour out of YVR, on a more positive note I thoroughly enjoyed DragonAir, it's regional affiliate though.
I believe I may change our tickets back to Taiwan with SIA instead though.
CX is a great airline, but it needs some work on some comfort areas I believe.
It's better than any US carrier I've flown across the Pacific of course, but I was a bit taken aback when I found the regional carrier seemed to be better than the mainline carrier it fed, stuck me a bit odd. Singapore and Malaysia Airlines I found to be much better in terms of comfort, amenity and other factors like cabin comfort, air, etc.
CX's piloting was superb of course.
On the ground, one thing I did -not- like was the -chaotic- manner they change gates at CLK Airport without notice. This is a major pain in the @ss. We were assembled at Gate 4 for the departure, then without an announcement, changed to Gate 6, only on the departure board -behind- Gate 4, by pure luck I walked back to check a magazine outlet when I looked around and noticed our gate had been changed. Yet, the flight number that was originally posted at the gate..disappeared. Gate 6 turns out to be in the basement.
The vocal announcement noting the change were only announced around 25 minutes prior to gate boarding time it appeared. We walked to our gate and waited for a spell until -finally- the gate change was announced, you should have seen the throng of people coming down the stairs. (LOL!)
Some folks werent too happy about that, the moving walkways at CLK only go -one direction- outbound to the gates in the Gate 4 area, so it was a bit of a walk back to the central atrium area, then down the stairs.
