Why No 'Q' In BA Reg

Tue Feb 04, 2003 11:19 am

Question...

How come BA doesn't use a 'Q' in it's registrations. There is no G-BNLQ, G-VIIQ, G-CIVQ etc.

Any ideas?????

glad someone else has noticed that. I've got no idea the reason why but I am guessing it may have something to do with the Royal family(Q=Queen???)

Actually, 'Q' is not used on the UK register at all, due to it's visual similarity with the letter 'O'. It's a similar situation with UK vehicle number plates, except that 'Q' is used in some cases - for kit cars, or vehicles who's age can not be positively determined.

Queen? What will happen to the 'Ks' when we next have a King? Big grin

Cheers,
Adam

That's what I thought...maybe it had something to do with the Queen. But the 'Oscar' for 'O' and the 'Quebec' for 'Q' are very different so I doubt it would cause confusion.

I guess we'll put it down to another of life's great mysteries.....

Q is just not used by anything on any UK register from what i know.
British Cars, as mentioned above are VERY VERY rarely registered with a Q (with few excpetions)

Jayhup, it doesnt matter what it sounds like, if you read what was posted above, he said "visually" very similar.... they LOOK not sound the same.

There are a few more we dont use on cars too arent there, U is one of them im sure, UK cars (in the old system) we'rent registered U---XXX

It's just one of those things... like why are Canadian aircraft only registered C-Fxxx or C-Gxxx?

I think it is the similar apperance of the letters which would cause confusion / mis-reading, hence exclusion from the register.
I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...
