WestJet Rumour...

Thu Feb 06, 2003 11:48 am

I heard a rumour today that Westjet is about to announce service to yet another Canadian city, but this person did not know what location.

Anyone care to make a prediction?

Mark? ... Neil? ...

PS. This person works for the airline.

Yellowknife!?

Nah, I think Westjet may even serve Montreal before YZF...perhaps St. Johns or Charlottetown? I cant think of anywhere out west, except for maybe Lethbridge, or full time service to Brandon. In Ontario there is the remote possibility of Kingston, (doubtful)....

So its either in the Maritimes, or its Quebec...and I think most of us know which one of the two would be more likely...

There's nowhere left in Ontario really.

I'd quess Lethbridge first, St.John's second, Montreal third and Sydney NS fourth.

I am going to say St. Johns or Charolottetown unless Montreal gave Westjet what they wanted to fly into Montreal.

When is their next plane due?

I'd like to seem them at YHU. It will create a boom in low cost air travel in the Montreal area, and maybe then Jetsgo will pay more attention to Montreal. Unless of course WJ and others see better opportunities elsewhere, so it would probably be the east coast. St. John's sounds good to me.

AirCanadaMan, it wont be anywhere up north  Smile

St Johns seems the most likely. Lethbridge, Red Deer, Yellowknife, Whitehorse, Brandon, Kamloops are all possibilities I guess.

I'd like to see Chicago Midway (MDW) with service from YHM, YYC, YWG. That would scare AC. It's time for WJ to go transborder.

I can't see WestJet starting service into YYG (Charlottetown). Jetsgo just started service today the 05Feb and WS operates into YQM (Moncton) which is not very far away. I would say St. John's would DEFINATELY be a big money maker for WS if they started service in there.

Just face it, its going to be a Quebec location....they would be stupid not to visit there. I am assuming they will do a continuation from like YYC-YYZ-YUL or other Quebec city.

Don't expect them to skip right over Quebec, i am sure that a deal was made, since AC is pulling routes and i bet there will be room for atleast a few good slot times!

I don't think that they could compete in the maritime provinces with just one silly route, they have to raise market share here in Central Canada and move slowly...

Hey Neil, do you think in the years to come WJ will take over CanJet and use/retire their aircraft and absorb the semi profitable routes in the East? Eastjet could arise, well maybe that could be a nickname?

Mark, you wont live very long if you say stuff like that. WestJet will be in Montreal this year or the next. It will either be YUL or YHU. After that, they will expand into other cities in Quebec, as Grant suggested, Quebec City for example. It's a matter of time. Patience is a virtue.

Leightbridge... thats my best guess but my hopefulls are Powel River (might be too small of a runway but one airline used to bring 737's in there I was told) or Sydney NS so I can vist my relatives. A transborder would be nice though

Nuno,

I know bud... however, WestJet and ADM talks have ceased, and they have not re-started since. They want to go to YHU, yet it is my understanding that YHU wont have the necessary terminal and runway infrastructure for at least the next couple of years..

And if WestJet will go to YQB, it will definitely need to develop a French aspect, which it clearly would like to avoid....

So its an impasse.... I think we'll see towns before Montreal..

Last week Air Canada dropped its early a.m. YYT-YYZ flight.
The only other morning flight stops in YHZ.
So St. John's a big opening IMHO if Westjet is willing to overnight in YYT..

Yes, WJ could start service in la belle province, but French is essential in my opinion. You know the French can be stubborn and will refuse to fly WJ if they don't get their service in French. A guy was suing Air Canada last year because he wasn't served in French, so it's a bigger deal than you think. It shouldn't be a huge deal to get adequate French service though, as long as one of the flight attendants on board is fluent, that should cover it.

Air Canada is required by law to provide service in french so thats why he could sue...WJ does not have to provide service in both languagues if they dont want to, but I think they should if they want to be a national carrier....

I think that the only way for WJ to dominate Canada is to infect Quebec with the WJ virus. Its spreading, and if they want to be able to afford those aircraft, ie the 700 series, they HAVE TO crack into Quebec somewhere, and somewhere good, not YMX!

Guys money talks..

Why do people fly NW from YUL to SAN instead of AC, or why do people fly BA to CDG rather than AF? Whoever offers the better deal and schedule will ultimately prevail.... And this is why Canadian never did anything out of Montreal.

Money talks, and they'll go for the best deals. But the price difference between the low costs is so insignificant most of the time that the French speaking people will inevitably prefer flying with low costs, other than WestJet, unless the price difference becomes significant. Given that you can expect very small differences in price, WJ will have a hard time appealing to the Quebec market without sufficient service in Francais.

-If WestJet offers YULYYC or YULYVR, something that is large in terms of origin & destination, which is also not served, WJ wont take much to be succesful...

Again I'll give you the stats YULYVR: 400,000 pax per year
YULYYC: 150,000 pax per year

If WJ is the only one offering non-stop, it wont take very long at all for them to be succesful.

WestJet doesnt only cater to the local market, but locals from Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver travelling to Toronto, so its a two-part process here. But offering service in French shouldnt be such a big-deal to develop... Canjet did it, why cant WestJet?

I agree, but WJ has more to gain by offering sufficient French. Otherwise if and when others offer similar services, the French will prefer flying with the others.

I think WJ does very will connecting and the prices are reasonable for what you get. Maybe, have one or two direct flights a day and have one or two connecting through different major cities...

As Mark has pointed out, there is potential for a carrier to make this route profitable and sustain customers.

The only thing is whats happened to the WJ philosphoy.....go to the small cities...is this still in place or have they grown too big for that....they can play hardball now with the big boys?

Just a thought on the YZF rumour.... I've heard this one for about 8 months.... I don't believe the loads out of YEG are high enough to make money without the ability to carry cargo. And I mean 10-15K lbs of cargo on a regular basis... not going to get that into the belly of a 737-200 or -700. You need the combi capability.
Also don't think WJ will be able to offer a much better fare than 5T of 7F does at this time.....

My thoughts...for what their worth Big grin

It could be argued that WJ could service YUL as an English-only service akin to other Canadian cities. This a large enough English-speaking population in YUL to support several daily YUL flights. People opposed to this can choose not to fly WJ from YUL.

YYZ717 is absolutely true about Westjet not needing total French service to fly out of Montreal. Many low-cost airlines in Europe probably don't offer language services to all the destinations they fly to, so why can't Westjet do the same? Westjet actually does have some flight attendents fluent in French, so service could be offered with a least one french speaking flight attendent. I think the larger issue why WJ is not in Montreal is the problems with YUL management and the YHU factor. Remember it took awhile for Westjet to get into YYZ - they have some pretty strict requirements from the airport authority's in order for them to fly. As for where Westjet will go, I like the idea of Kamloops, if of course the runway upgrades have been completed (?). US service I still seeing being a few years away.

a.) Have a French version of the website

b.) Have French signs at the airport

c.) have French CSA's/Ramp crew

I'd guess stateside in the west, either SEA, SLC, or LAS, markets with little or no nonstops from YYC. LAS would be my first choice.

Wesjet could do well in YZF if offering return flights 3x weekly or so. Most people getting off of YEG from YZF continue on with Westjet.

But I don't think that there is room for more check-in desks.

WJ would not need to do this initially. All services/signs could be in English initially as they began YUL service. Once they expanded YUL service, they could add French signs/service.

I flew Ryanair to Sweden last summer....most of the passengers were Swedes yet no Swedish was spoken by the flight crew on the aircraft. WJ could start YUL service the same way.

Honestly....what is the big deal with being fluent...do you think that if someone was in a life and death situation, and they couldn't speak english....ie choking or needed medication, that someone on the flight would not know how to speak just a little?

I am sure that there are F/A and others onboard, such as pilots flying with bilingual capabilities!

I agree with Mark and Neil at the same time. Montrealers are mostly fully bilingual and could not careless about flying in English or French (They are used to it anyway). BUT! Canada is apparently a bilingual country with obviously 2 official languages. WestJet should show some respect to the Montreal/Quebec population/language/culture. Mark said it....CanJet was able to, why not WestJet.

International carriers can....such as BA, KL, AA and US etc... Why not a Canadian carrier like WestJet?

I am not expecting to be served in French when I fly KL out of YUL. That's a bonus when I am! WestJet could offer Quebecers the same service.

Canada is only obviously bilingual in one province...and that is New Brunswick...everything else is just on paper...that said I do think WJ should offer bi-lingual service and not because they are Canadian, but because I think it is an important thing to have at any airline...A minimum of 2 languages should be and is required by most airlines...It would not be hard for WJ to adopt this program...even if it is just in Quebec...ground handling and signage are Contracted out to local companies so there is no problem in getting bi-lingual there...and as was pointed out many FA's at WJ do in fact speak french...I maintain though that WJ avoids Quebec because they feel they can make more money in other places...and thats where they will go first...

I won't exactly predict which new routes WJ will start service, or even whether WJ will fly into Montreal or Quebec City, because not only is the airline industry doing poorly, but look at how the security tax and other fees are hurting short-haul travel now!

One province is bilingual...(NB) But not changing the fact that Canada (federally) is officially bilingual.
