Upper Deck On 747 Freighters.

Thu Feb 06, 2003 1:42 pm

Hi folks.....
Anyone know what is the upper deck is used for on the pure freighter version of the 747? Are there any seats or sleeper-beds for the flight crew? Perhaps they use the space for small, portable pieces of freight, such as live animals & parcels? All replies welcomed. Regards.

Yes there are seats up there for transportation of staff. If you think about it....on a normal 747 there are stairs...i don't think there are stairs on a 747F, just a ladder....the pilots have to get up there some how...I think if there were stairs, there wouldn't be room to front load cargo

Or, the upperdeck door is opened...but i believe they enter from the normal door...see the air stairs there...

Have a look at some more pics....just do a search, 747/cargo....answers a lot of my questions!!

P.S. Happy searching!

Our B747-400 freighters have a ladder which is retracted at times to aid in cargo loading. The upper deck houses 6 business class seats, a galley, 2 bunks and a host of emergency equipment. The seats are there for such people as animal handlers, who are required to occupy a seat during take-off and landing.

Cheers.

The suggested seating arrangement for the A380F features about 12-16 sleeper type business class seats.

Frequently cargo requires some kind of special handler, not even just animals but other sensitive items.

As we learned in Cast Away, FedEx even ships their employees Priority Overnight.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I'm not surprised at the fact the A380-800F will have 12-16 Business class type seats. I believe that certain types of payloads the A388F carries requires a handler to accompany the cargo for various reasons, and having near-flat or flat-reclining roomier seats is a good idea for cargo handler accommodation given A388F flights will be longer in duration than 747-400F or MD-11F flights.

On our 744Fs we have 6 biz class seats and 2 sleeping bunks. Our 742Fs have seating for 3 (cattle class seats) and 2 bunks as well. While our 743F has 8 seats and 2 bunks. Some airlines do it differently (I know that Atlas only has 4 seats), but I believe that this is pretty standard.

And yes, there is a retractable ladder on al of them, so we can load cargo underneath the upper deck.

Tom

When I worked at Fedex & they still had 741/742 aircraft, there were 18 seats in the upper deck.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Years ago (mid 80s), Flying Tigers' 747s had seats up top, and they allowed OA employees to non-rev up there. It was a great way to get from ANC to HKG, NRT, etc. Course you had to bring your own food and stuff, but it was still a unique way to travel.

Great picture posted by Lapper. But look at the photographer's name - shouldn't it be Tony Double-Decker? Big grin
