Best Aircraft Nickname Ever?

Fri Feb 07, 2003 3:14 pm

You gotta love Muse Air's lone DC-9-30 named 'Spike". It was later replaced by a DC-9-50 named "Spirit of Spike". They only operated the -30 for a couple of years...I think it was fitted with 112 blue leather seats. I miss that airline! I flew them once to MCO, and on the way back, the aircraft was in the TranStar livery.

I like Friendship and Fellowship for the Fokker 27 and the Fokker 28 very much: friendly and positive.

I think all of the "Clipper ..." ships (God rest their souls) deserve honorable mention.

That said, I liked Playboy's "Black Bunny" name quite a bit. Also, AZ's "Portofino" sounds pretty nice.

As for livery names... "Tropical Megatop" and "Nalanji Dreaming" are an easy tie for #1 in my book.

I think one of the most flattering nicknames for an aircraft is "Gooneybird". That name has sticked for 60 years!

The most funny one I've ever seen is (or was) FedEX's 727 named "Two Bears". AS to the ones I liked all the "clipper....." and the "....peacemaker" from PanAm and Piedmont respectively are the highest in my rank.

thanks!

Best: Super Guppy.

Worst nickname I can remember, on the other hand, is American Airlines' "LuxuryJet" and "LuxuryLiner" (used for their narrowbodies and widebodies respectively). Keep in mind these names were decided on *before* MRTC.

For the record, Jj, Piedmont's planes were 'pacemakers,' not 'peacemakers.'

The "rope-start" 747-100. The 727 was known as the "pig" because it burnt a lot of gas and made a lot of sound.

Western used to refer to their (then) new 737-200's as "Fat Albert" after a Bill Cosby character.

One of the classiest names (along with the Clippers) were the TWA Constellations. They had individual names each beginning with "Star", such as Star of India, Star of Paris, and the airplane on which I took my very first flight, Star of Balmoral.

Nickname given to the 737 when it was first introduced in the late 1960s: FLUF -- for Fat Little Ugly Fellow. (Even though I never agreed)

757: "Stork" for its long-legged appearance

Tu-204: "757ski" (as in a Slavic 757)

How about the "Equalizer" for the C-141 Starlifter. You put a well dressed millionaire and a bum into the plane. Then fly them across the Atlantic and they will look alike when they leave the plane.

I've heard the old saying about the Tupolev TU-104, the first Russian jet airliner: ТУ сто-четырый - самый быстрый самолет до гроби, or for non-Russian speakers, TU-104 - the fastest airplane to the coffin.

Reeve Aleutian had a YS-11 registered N169R.

It had been aquired by Reeve after a worldwide search for a replacement YS for the one the Federal Aviation Administration burned with the hanger they and Reeve shared in Anchorage.

It was aquired from some government in Africa and Reeve took possesion of it in Malta.

So hencefore....it was known as...

BAC 1-11 = 'Pocket Rocket' one of my favourites for civilian.
Lockheed Constellation= 'Connie' another goodie

one of our E-3s (tail 1604) is Nicknamed the 'Wobbly Goblin' due to the wobble in the tail and the whale-mating like noises from the rotodome.
Also 1407 is known as 'Jurasic Jet' as it is the oldest E-3 and not new build but made from an Argentina 707.

II-76 (and I guess other jets) used for zero G astonaut training - Vomit Comet

As Trident notes, despite its sleek lines, the HS Trident was known as "gripper", particularly the underpowered srs 1 and the larger srs 3's which did in fact have a fourth engine for TO performance.

C5 Galaxy - Fat Albert

I always liked the Eastern "Whisper..." series, but applying them to the 727 was quite frankly taking the p***

Someone notes the 727 as the "pig" but in my day it was always the 737 which attracted this affectionate title.

I am quite sure I flew on a British Airways L1011 Tristar 200 to Kuala Lumpur in 1985 or 86 that was 'christened' - 'The Little Red Devil'. Anyone remember this aircraft. It was prior to BA switching to the Landor colours and had the old red union tail and midnight blue belly. In fact, it was probably its brilliant name that started my passion for following aircraft!

After that flight, every other Tristar I flew on carried the 'Landor' colours and were named after roses and other landmarks in Britain.
