Jetblue's Ontime Performance

How is B6's on time performance compared to the majors?

I have flown them 11 times JFK-FLL and have only been on time once. Is it just that route. I know any Snowbird route can be hectic with any airline.

Ive flown them extensively and have had minimal delays- I also fly the same route as you JFK-FLL-JFK.

Living in New York, delays come with the territory. Its 12:39pm on Friday right now and I have got 9 inches of snow (and more to come. NO SCHOOL!!!)

I am at BTV, and their performance here is always delayed, as per the flights I have taken (I haven't flown B6 much, but a couple of rt flights)..
I wonder if we can have a look at this statistically

Well, jetBlue could definately work on their turn-around procedure, HOw did Southwest do on-time with their short turn around times in the first few years????????????????
jetBlue has just got to get used to teh show, like Southwest has and the other low-fares with short turn-around times.

For 2002, JetBlue flew 99.8% of scheduled flights, better than any other major US carrier (probably than any of the regionals too). Furthermore, their on-time perfomrnace of 85.7% exceeded that of all major carriers.

Personally, I find their completion rate astonishing.

I think Continentals completion rate was 99.8% also for the year

The rates are not the least bit astonishing when you only have something like 40 planes! That's not a lot of assets to worry about. You could keep the disposition of each aircraft in memory....

It's quite a different feat to try and keep 400-700 birds up there daily...and on time.

Not to detract from JetBlue..but comparing them to the majors is a joke.

What airlines don't have acars? WN Has them now right? That why they aren't number 1 anymore for ontimes, they have to be honest.

At the end of this month, B6 will have 184 flights a day.

You have a good point that it's not really fair to compare a 38 plane fleet to a 500 plane fleet, since it's easier to track your resources when you're smaller. But the flipside is that JetBlue also has fewer resources and connections available to recover service, so it's actually more difficult to get everyone to their destinations (or complete flights) when things go wrong. It's made worse because load factors are quite a bit higher than at competing airlines, so combining flights isn't an option. More, given the fewer flights, a single cancellation at JetBlue has much more impact on the performance numbers than a single cancellation at, say, Delta, so the combination of high completion factor and ontime performance is still impressive, and reasonably accurate for comparison.

Besides, look at most other small airlines. They don't dominate completion factor and ontime performance because of these factors, though you would think so given your assumption. JetBlue really is well run in an operational sense, and being small doesn't make it any easier.

I'll stand by my original statement. There is absolutely no comparison.

Furthermore, JetBlue has spanking new equipment. Except for weather and the occasional staffing screw ups...ontime performance should be much higher(although as primarily a leisure carrier it shouldn't matter much).

Personally, I disagree. Smaller carriers with a majority of traffic originating from a single hub (eg. JetBlue) tend to see the operations much more adversely affected by poor weather than large hub-and-spoke carriers. And, JFK sees its seasonal share of thunderstorms and snowstorms. Smaller low-fare carriers like JetBlue also tend to have heavier aircraft utilization/fewer spares. It's easier for a larger carrier to juggle aircraft/crew assignments or allot spare aircraft to compensate for out-of-service aircraft. At smaller carriers, one or two out of service aircraft can have a serious impact on the day's schedule.

To be fair, single fleet-type carriers such as JetBlue have an easier time minimizing delays.

In the past, the domino effect was a bigger factor for the hub-and-spoke carriers, but in recent years, most carriers have tightened their guidelines concerning holding flights for connecting passengers.

WN Has them [ACARS] now right?
According to the Air Travel Consumer Report, WN still records manually.

That's why it is a rate and not a raw figure. A rate allows one to compare all airlines...no matter how big or small...on a level playing field.

No.

We are still in the process of installing ACARS; I should know, I run enough ACARS wiring. So you can dispose of the whole "dishonesty" conspiracy theory.
