Crew Rest In MD11 - Are There Bunks?

Sat Feb 08, 2003 2:09 am

I wonder if any airline have crew rest bunks in MD11? I mean like the ones in B747s or in A340s in pictures below.

Yes, there are!

Swissair / Swiss has got one bunk in the business clsss (hatrack in the middle of the fuselage, used by the relief pilot) and the other one located next to the aft galley in economy class offering some (don't know how many) beds for the flight attendants.

Cheers, Thomas

Thanks Thomas for your answer,

But if you compare with B747 (above in the aft) and A 340 (below in the middle) it seems that MD11s do not have them planned from the beginning. I wonder why. Anyway, they do fly very long flights also with MD11s (and DC10s) and one would think it to be very important for the crew to be able to lie down also.

Best regards

The Swissair crew rest is a little unusual for the MD-11. I believe that they are the only ones to have the "Hatrack" Bunk Beds. AA had bunks on the left side of the fuselage, aft of the L2 door. DL originally had a "condo" that took up about 20 seats in the coach cabin (similar to the SR Attendant Rest). However, most of the MD-11 operators (including DL) have a pull out pilot rest with two bunk beds aft of the cockpit, which blocks the L1 door during flight.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Just by pure accident, I came accross a picture of (proposed stretched) MD11 cabin mockup with a crew rest area installed in the centre overhead baggage rack aft of the 2nd aircraft entrance. Source: Aviation Week August 22, 1988
I have scanned the picture & upload it to Angelfire. Hope it works!  Smile

They would slide out (in accordion style) in front of door 1 left (during cruising flight only of course) and offer 2 bunks one above the other occupying the otherwise empty space in front of the door

 Big thumbs up

Saudia has got a crew bunk on their MD11 freighters. It has the size of an AMJ-container and is loaded on maindeck position 1L. It contains 4 crewbunks and 2 seats. I heard it was certified as fire barrier, as no dangerous goods can be loaded on maindeck if not fitted.

The 7 DL MD-11 Trans Pacific Aircraft have a crew rest for the pilots. The bunks are located just forward of Door 1. In cruise, the wall pulls out to extend the bunks and doors swing open to enclose the area for the flight crew.

The DL MD-11 used to have main deck crew rest mid-cabin a few years back. It was affectionately known as the condo.

Thai Airways MD-11 had a telescoping crew rest compartment behind the cockpit on the lefthand side. Pretty neat set up.
Never take financial advice from co-workers.
