Lufthansa Re-route EZE/SCL; GRU Gets 744

Sat Feb 08, 2003 12:04 pm

This comes from Flyertalk.

Lufthansa will make small adjustments on its South America flight. Sao Paulo will be served by a 744, not the "traditional" 343.

Non-stop flight to Buenos Aires will become 1-stop flight via Sao Paulo, with reduced frequencies. (Day 1357)

1-stop flight to Santiago de Chile will be re-routed via Sao Paulo instead of Buenos Aires. (Day 246)

Not a big surprise - LH now joins Swiss and BA in routing EZE flights via GRU. AR, AZ and AF must be the few that continue to operate Europe-Argentina non-stop.

I've flown LH526 several times in the past (hence my username  Smile/happy/getting dizzy )
In peak times I was unable to book a flight on LH526 even 8 months in advance!
FRA-EZE was LHs longest non-stop flight, sad to see it being dropped, always was a great time aboard  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
*Farewell LH526*

That looks very simmilar to LHs routings in the late 80s/early 90s. I've flown to SCL in january 1990 and we also had a stopover in GIG at that time!

Does anybody know when these changes are due? I fly with LH to Sao Paulo (and onward with RG to SCL) on march 5th this year and I'm booked on a A340. Any changes on the flight numbers?

I really regret that decision!

I flew often to Baires via Frankfurt. Departing from Stockholm Lufthansa offered me far better service and a much smoother connection than Iberia and lower fares than AF, another of my alternatives.

Now the stop at Sao Paolo will surely add a couple of hours to the journey making it less attractive.

As LH526 says, it has often been difficult to get a place on those flights. I got the impression they were always full. But as someone said a time ago in this forum (and I had difficult to understand) the airline might have been loosing money on this route with the aircraft full with the wrong kind of passengers (economy/lowest fare).

Having flown both airlines, I would agree that Lufthansa's service better (more professional) than Iberia's, although the latter is getting better (in terms of cabin service).

I would still say that out of all three airlines, BA still provides the best all-round service (especially friendliness of the cabin staff...), and I would choose BA every time, except for the fact that almost all other airlines are cheaper (LH, AZ, IB etc...) to EZE.

I can't speak for the other airlines, but I always found BA's Club class to EZE very full (judging by the check-in desks). Perhaps due to the economic situation (particularly bad in Argentina and Germany) European airlines are finding it difficult to fill the forward cabins....this is especially true for BA. Lufthansa is also cutting out First Class on a number of routes, although EZE does not yet appear on that list....
