Delta Retires 727 April 6TH

Mon Feb 10, 2003 10:00 am

Any Delta employees know the route of the last Delta 727 flight on 6 April, possibly ATL-SAT? I read the retirement notice on Airways News Online

Could you post the info from Airways? Last year I had heard sometime in April, then recently I had heard later this year around Sept. Thanks.

I don't think ATL-SAT. The 727 left that route several months ago.

FL,
You missed out, IMO, the 727-200 is the best aircraft to grace the skies. Pioneer of civil aviation with high lift devices, first Boeing civil a/c to have an APU, and has served it's people faithfully since 1963  Smile

JCs17,

Why should the retirement been 7 years ago????? Booming economy back then, "cough-Bill-cough", and some 727s were only 15 years old!!! Your post is ridiculous!!!

Speaking of DL 727's.......I had my 727 wake up call this AM. DL's 1126 to ATL flew over my house after taking off from r/w 4 turning South. I gotta get on one of these before 3-31 ....

As of 4:31pm on my flight tracker the only DL 727s I find are:

DAL2176 ELP-ATL
DAL507 SDF-ATL
DAL550 CVG-TPA
DAL824 MCI-ATL
By 06APR03 all I keep seeing is MD88's for those.

Perhaps it's a morning flight (wasn't the final NW 727 flight earlier in the day?)

06APR03 DL1442 departs 7:15am GSO-ATL B727.

at least 20 of DL727s have found new life after DL... they'll be in Indonesian Airlines... I dunno where they'll fly to, since 727s can't fly to a lot of destinations here...

This is of course subject to change, but.......

There are no 727's scheduled to fly on April 6, which is the day of the new schedule change. The last one I can find on April 5 is flight875 BUF-ATL 810PM-1020PM. So far, this is the last scheduled 727 flight I can find in the system.

Jackson to Atlanta, April 6, 2003
Depart 7:50am from Jackson, arriving at 10:01am in Atlanta (1:11 total flight time)
Carrier flight #Delta 1426
Depart Time 7:50am Jackson (JAN)
Arrive Time 10:01am Atlanta (ATL)
Equipment type - Boeing 727-200
Stops 0

Last 727 flight I can find on their website, everything else turns to MD88 or 737. Is that in the computers? I'm sure their website isn't 100% accurate. I'm going to keep on searching and emailing a few people with DL (no answers yet). But your finding seems to make more sense.

I went and checked again. You are right, flight 1426 does show to be a 727. I am hoping that as we get closer to the date, Delta will make some type of formal announcement of the final revenue flight. They could likely fill it up if nothing else for nostalgia reasons. I am hoping they do this in similar fashion to the retirement of the L1011. There was a final revenue flight and then there was an opportunity for employees to bid for a seat on the final flight to the desert. A lot of us would like to have the same chance with the 727.

Yeah, if you hear anything different or they make an announcement lets us know! I want to book ASAP. Last revenue L1011 flight was great, I'm sure this one will be just as good.

Greensboro (GSO)
8:36am
Atlanta (ATL)
Boeing 727-200

Maybe the next to last?

A sad day indeed when that last flight lands. The 727 is probably my favorite Boeing a/c, I've flown on two of them with Delta (ATL-DCA), and really liked the a/c. One of those flights they had to drag out an old school tray for my seat (you know, the ones that have legs that you stick into the armrests), and I really felt like I was travelling back in the 60s of 70s. I have as much nostalgia for the 727 as I do the L-1011.

I heard that about 12 or so of the 727s are going to be broken up at GWO. anybody else hear this? I'm going to have to get with my contact there and try to arrange to be there when they arrive, if they are indeed going to.

DFW-ATL flight 480 seems to be the last 727 then. 480 continues on to ORF but changes to a MD88 that day.

Could they not sell the aircraft, rather than scrapping them?

Just bringing this post back to life.
Airways mag, and some others on flyer talk are saying DL607 GSO-ATL on the 6th is the last trip.

Delta will make some type of formal announcement of the final revenue flight. They could likely fill it up if nothing else for nostalgia reasons.

I was on the final AA 727 departure from MIA, it wasn't 100% full. Honestly, there was probably 3 or 4 other people that actually were flying on it to be on the final departure. I had a whole row to myself as well haha (I think I was the only person)

As stated in my trip report, check it out in that section! , I got to fly on N533DA and N8890Z (new colors) on Sunday. While at ATL I didn't see any MD90's . Does ATL get any or are they out of SLC for noise-sensitive So-Cal airports. I also wanted to say that the MD80's are LOUD! I like it ! We'll be seeing them with the ASA CRJ700's in ROC starting 4-1. I'm sure gonna miss the Delta 727 in ROC  Sad

In my opinion, the 727 is by far one of the best aircraft ever built in aviation history.

It's one hell of a workhorse I tell ya.

I had the pleasure of flying it in the past and will never forget my flights on it.

It will grace the skies in my heart forever.

So long old bird.

How many 727s are left in the fleet? What is the timeline for retiring the rest of the fleet? If someone knows actual reg. numbers along with retirement dates, that would be appreciated.

I know MEM's last Delta 727 will be April 5th, flight 768 to ATL, unfortunately I will have been displaced to MCI by then,so I wont be there  Sad

I believe MCI currently has 1 727 to ATL a day, so that would make April 5th the last 727 flight from MCI as well (maybe I'll be working it there- who knows?)

Hate to see this bird leave the fleet and get replaced with MD-88s those 5 seats will be sorely missed on some flights.
