Widebody Widths

Wed Feb 12, 2003 2:34 pm

Apologies if this has been asked before (a search did not reveal anything) or if this is the wrong forum for such a question (ie should be in Tech/Ops) but I was wondering if anyone has accurate width measurements of all of the major widebodies?

I have found the following in my limited references but can't verify accuracy :

767 Can't find anything would you believe
A300 etc 18' 6" 5.64m
L-1011 19' 7"
DC-10 etc 19' 9" 6.02m
777 20' 4" 6.20m
747 20' 6.10m (listed as internal)
Il86 Wouldn't have a clue
Il96 Ditto

Any help would be appreciated.

The 777 is definitely not as wide as the 747.

The A300/310/330/340 are 222 in wide.

767
Interior-15'6"/4.7m
Exterior-16'6"/5.03m

747
Exterior-21'4"/6.5m

Almost any information about Boeing airplanes, including MDD airplanes, can be found on their airport planning website.

These are interior cabin widths

767 = 15'6"
777 = 19'3"
747 = 20'

A300/310/330/340 = 17'4"

L-1011 = 18'11"
DC-10/MD-11 = 18'9"

I'm not sure about those Russian planes, but I think they seat 9-abreast maximum, so their interior cabin width should be around that of an Airbus widebody.

707/737/757 external width is 148 inches and I think they usually say the internal width is 139 inches. A320 is 6-7? inches wider.

Supposedly DC-4/6/7 internal width is 118 1/2 inches and B377 is 123 inches.

Thanks for the help guys.

The Il86/96 diameter is 6.08 m or 19' 11.4" by the way.

In case anyone wanted to know the original reason why I asked this question was mainly limited to a 747 / 777 comparison as I was wanting to know that if there was ever a freighter version of the 777 whether it could take two 8 x 8 's side by side like the 747. However this was then extended to seeing how the Tristar compared as as a hobby project I was looking at "designing" a "Quadstar". That is : a stretched four engined Tristar with an increased span Galaxy wing (wing root insert for increased chord and accomodation for undercarriage) with an additional project of a freighter version of the same thing with a Galaxy nose and cockpit. (Well you have to do something to keep the imagination going when "real life" projects are so boring!)

Thanks again.

The only thing that can be misleading with the width is where the floor is. For example, I know the A320 series is "wider" than the Boeing narrowbodies, but I swear they feel tighter at shoulder height (not a big deal). Can anyone confirm this?

Mls515-

Yes. The A320 can squeeze at the shoulders. Its only wider around waist level.

Due to the floor location.
