SQ Replaces A340 On SIN/PEK From 01 March?

Wed Feb 12, 2003 8:23 pm

According to current flight schedules from Singapore Airlines, it seems that they will replace A340 on SIN / WSSS), Singapore">SIN/PEK / ZBAA), China">PEK (SQ812/811) route with B772 from 01 March, 2003. I wonder that is it just a temporary aircraft change or this time it means that A340 won't be used for SQ812/811 flights again, because I remembered that Singapore Airlines had used B772 for SQ812/811 flights in 2002 and they jumped back to A340. How about this time? (Anyone from Singapore Airlines knows what are they going to do)

Sorry for taking you guys time, I just want to know what aircraft will I on-board in the future, because I'm a regular user of SQ812/811s.

My guess will be that the 772 will replace the 343 completely, and I do not think they will switch back to a 343 later. The China routes have been doing well for SQ, and with spring and summer coming up, more people will be on that SIN - PEk route.

Star Alliance shows that SIA's double daily PEK-SIN is currently operated by 777.

A340 will be pulled out from Beijing service forever, as these Celestars will be retired.

Well on 12 February, SQ812 and SQ802 were operated by an A340 and 772 respectively.

However, Singapore Airlines schedules indicate a change of aircraft for SQ812 (depart SIN 0115 and arrive Beijing 0710) to a Boeing 777-200 Series from Saturday 1 March 2003.

The flight will still take 5 hours and 55 minutes to complete.

Ex_SQer, you know that as a frequent flyer with Singapore Airlines as well as a regular user of SQ812/811, I have always enjoyed my past experiences with SIA's A340 and when it suddenly comes to the point you know that you may never fly on that type of aircraft again (especially with one of carriers you like), you do feel abit lost sometimes.

Carnoc... completely understandable. Many of SQ's flyers (not to mention the crew) express nostalgia for the 747 Classics, DC-10s, 707s, etc

After they withdraw this A340 from their fleet, how many A340s will SIA have? When do they plan to phase all the A340s out?

Of course they do not plan to phase all A340s, only the 343s. Remember the 345s are coming in soon.

Strange how SIA is phasing out the 343s, while other airlines like SAS and Turkish have 343 as the pride of their fleet.

It's sad to see the SQ A343s going . I wished they were keeping a few to fly along side with the A345 .

 Sad

Rupertvander82: I was referring to the A343s, I'm aware SQ have on order 10 A340-500s, 5 of which are on firm order, and another 5 on option. Perhaps I should’ve made that clear.

I’m wondering though, why did SQ decide to sell the A340s to Boeing in favor of more 777s? In what way were they so dissatisfied with A340? While most had a few thousand flight hours on them, a few were also brand new!!

The 777 is superior.

Shocking Embarrassment. Maybe not.

The 777 had a higher climb rate, performed better (as in faster) on the SIN - CDG route apparently and carries more passengers.

It is therefore logical for the disposal of the A340-300E.

Hkg82: Do a search. SQ's replacing the 343 with the 777 has been discussed several times. This thread will probably degenerate into another A vs B war if people continue discussing this issue here.

Isn't SIA going to retain 3-5 A340-300 so they can have more time to train the pilots when A340-500 arrives?
