I think there's some problem with A.net scripting of HTML or something? Many codes doesnt seem to work!

Yay! It worked.

There's a thread in the site related forum related to the HTMLproblem. Johan wrote:

The thingy around links has been removed. Now you'll simply have to post the link, that will work.

That's what I did- I just typed in the URL WITHOUT the brackets on either side and that seems to work.

Sounds like pretty good news for CMH.

Looks like most of my predictions came true.

The long sought after CMH-FLL will finally materialize. The CMH-JFK route is interesting. I think AA had tried it in the past, but with no success. I wonder if DL will be any luckier. The extra feed certainly can't hurt as the JFK-Europe flights tend to have the weakest loads compared to CVG-Europe or ATL-Europe.

I knew they would do CMH-FLL! Finally non-stop service from Columbus to Miami! Though I was hoping for MIA, it's still all good.

Heh, proofread your post MAH. :p FLL was needed, and I agree, MIA needs nonstop service. I'm assuming all of these routes are with the ERJs?

Going from no Florida service to serving both FLL and MIA would be a little overkill, no? Besides, I suspect that most CMH traffic will be headed to FLL anyways. The aiports are a lot closer in service if you remove the onward Latin/South America headed passengers.

Greetings:

Well my question is how is Delta going to make money on these routes if America West didn't? I have to believe America West's cost structure is lower then Delta's. Can anyone shed light on this for me?

This is definitely good news in light of America West's hub closure. I believe this shows that Columbus definitely has a strong O&D market and hub capabilities, especially when an airline with its second largest hub only a 2 hour drive away sees the possibility of making money on new routes from here. Hopefully Delta will move from their current location in Concourse C and move to America West's current gates in B. Their current location can't support the additional flights, and moving to Concourse B will allow them to use the regional jet gates America West installed.

This turn of events seems to mirror what happened in Raleigh-Durham about a year ago, after Midway closed their doors. American Airlines came in and started offering numerous new flights from RDU, partially filling the void left behind by Midway. Now all we need is for Delta to start a nonstop to London from CMH on a 777 like American does in RDU and we'll be all set...  Laugh out loud

PortColumbus:

I believe MAH4546 is implying that the new FLL service will provide access to the Miami area, since FLL does serve as a Miami secondary airport as well as serving the needs of the Ft. Lauderdale area. Also, after reading the Dispatch article, I think all the new routes will be served by Chautauqua ERJ's.

Tbird:

Doug Parker did an interview with NewsCenter on ABC 6 after the announcement of the closure of the Columbus hub, stating that a main factor was the fact that there was heavy competition on many of America West's routes, especially from Delta. Delta and America West had been in a battle for market share in CMH for years. Now with America West gone, Delta will have more passengers on the routes they're taking over from America West, as well as seize the opportunity to pursue new routes from Columbus, such as JFK and Ft. Lauderdale.

Here's the official press release, it looks like as America West steps down service, Delta will gradually step up service. The release includes a schedule of all the new flights, to be operated by ERJ-145's:

Doesn't it seem ironic, that these routes will be likely operated by the same Chautaqua ERJs that America West was using??

While AWA failed to make CMH work, DL can because most of these routes are to places that are either DL hubs or places of major DL concentration.

CMH-DFW not only captures the O+D that CMH creates, but allows for onward connections in the DL system. CMH-JFK captures some of the O+D traffic plus allows for European connections. CMH-FLL fills in a major gap in service. CMH-BOS captures O+D traffic, plus a small number of connections to BDA, PWM, YUL, FCO (summertime),CDG (AF),etc.

I wonder where the other ERJ's will go? DL is receiving 12 ERJ's and it certainly won't take 12 planes to cover just these new CMH flights. Some will have to appear elsewhere....MCO I would presume.

Is it possible that DL picked up the routes out of fear that another carrier would make a major move into CMH? After all, DL's big CVG hub isn't far away.

Sorry MAH.

FlyCMH has a good point. As reasons he stated, it seems like the perfect fit for DL to take over HP's gates. Definately some good news for CMH. Listening to 610 WTVN, they noted that other carriers are looking to expand service, and maybe we'll see the likes of AirTran and Frontier. It could happen.

I'd like to see more flights to Atlanta. At least lower the fares to be equal to Dayton. I know competition from AirTran keeps the fares lower in Dayton.

FlyCMH,

I don't know if DL will hire additional help for CMH. Logically, the additional flights will require more gates so DL would likely need a few more GA's. However, DL has so many people on furlough, I'm not sure how they will fill in any gaps. I think it is unlikely DL will hire any agents for check-in as DL is aggressively replacing those folks with kiosks and the agents from afar phone system.

I read today in the Columbus Biz Journal that expansion plans for CMH have now been cancelled.

I think AAI would be a good fit for CMH, though they would be going up against WN and DL on many of the Florida routes.

The article on 10tv - http://www.10tv.com/news/archive/021203local4233.php?story=021203local4233

Apparentely CMH is willing to eliminate landing fees and pay $50,000 in marketing costs for any new routes started. Hell, they are even trying to attract Hawaiian Airlines.

I might be way off, but by starting CMH-JFK, is DL trying to shut the door on JetBlue coming to CMH, or is it solely for international connections?

Probably a combination of both.

I'd say it's for international connections.

Interesting deal & good to see Delta expand at my home airport with service to DFW, FLL, RSW, BOS, and finally JFK, but I guess we can officially be called "Jungle Jet Heaven"...

I guess my question to DL is- why no Song?

About new airlines-IMO, AirTran may be iffy, as DAY is only 70ish miles from CMH. I could (and would want to) see Frontier, ATA, or Spirit coming in, and Alaska could be a possibility. Hawaiian or Aloha? Where the hell'd they get that idea?? Plenty of gate space though!

I'm was thinking the same thing Portcolumbus- With DL having a non-stop from CMH, would that scare jetBlue off, or would they do better with an A320 & cheap fares vs. an ERJ?

I'm back! Computer was shot for a week...
