Allegiant Hiring F/As For New Bases At DEN And RNO

Thu Feb 13, 2003 1:00 am

Expanding business has Allegiant Air adding new F/A bases at Denver (DEN) and Reno (RNO), joining the existing bases at Fresno (FAT) and Laughlin. Currently I understand that both bases are being established due to new charter contracts, not a major expansion of scheduled service. Rumors say the charter expansion is with Apple Vacations and a casino, possibly an expansion of the Harrahs-Reno contract.

As mentioned previously, the company is taking delivery in the next few weeks of 2 additional MD-83s. Rumors are that up to 5 more aircraft could arrive this year, depending upon additional charter contracts and some limited expansion of scheduled service.

And the company starts LAS-ICT (Wichita) on February 27.

I was just looking through the Harrahs charter schedules and noticed that Allegiant has a Phoenix/Mesa to Laughlin charter out on Feb 23 returning Feb 25.

The interesting thing is that this is out of Williams Gateway. I checked the Williams web site and it sounds like this is the first passenger service out of Williams. Is that correct?

Up until this point the "commerical" service that has been at Williams was a bunch of 2nd and 3rd tier cargo airlines. For some reason USAJet comes to mind. I haven't been down there in quite some time, it'll be even longer now that I am no longer in AZ, but airside development appeared to be pretty slow. Land re-use was in full swing. It would be interesting to see the "terminal" there. 22,000 sq feet sounds a lot like a refurbished hangar. Also would this place need to be staffed by TSA screeners?

Despite all the ubran sprawl in the east valley, Williams is still in the middle of nowhere. Though homes on the north and north east sides are getting to be within a mile from the perimeter. And roadway access is lacking. It is a good 5 mile trek down Power Rd from US 60 to get there. And when the 303 freeway is completed, probably well after 2010, you might be able to get within a mile of the main entrance.

Still it is interesting and encouraging news. Perhaps this is the niche that IWA needs to survive as an airport... and the old folks might prefer the plane over the bus up to Laughlin.
