TS L1011 Ymxpap Returns To YMX

Thu Feb 13, 2003 4:19 am

From Canada.com

"MIRABEL -- An Air Transat plane had to return to Mirabel Wednesday morning shortly after takeoff after experiencing engine problems.

A witness said one of the three engines of the aircraft, a Lockheed 1011, appeared to be vibrating. In response to the problem the pilot turned off the defective engine and turned back to land at Mirabel.

The aircraft, which was headed to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, discharged a significant amount of fuel as a precaution before landing without problem, around 9:15 a.m.

One hundred and forty-seven passengers and 14 crew members were on board"

I love the L-1011 (not too crazy about TS though) but I think the time has come for retirement. During a recent press conference, TS' president hinted that they are looking at a plan to simplify their fleet. They currently operate 752s, 313s, 332, 333, L-1011-250, L-1011-500; way too much models for a fleet of barely 20 planes. I think they'll get rid of the 313 and all Tristar and stick with 752s and 33x.
Never let the facts get in the way of a good theory.

Well, one incident like this does not render an aircraft type retireable. Was this an L10 or an L15?

Only 147 pax on a 360-seat charter flight? Yikes.

Offhand, is PAP a big tourist draw, or is most of the traffic from Montreal VFR from the large Haitian community?

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Neil,

PAP is a huge VFR draw..

Air Canada owns the market now, with 3 767's a week... AC does very well in terms of load factor.

147 isnt a big number, but the flights arent sold by Air Transat Holidays, they are sold by Haiti Charter express..

Thanks Mark.

Perhaps TS makes money on the flight then if they're selling the entire aircraft to Haiti Charter.

Indeed!

But I do remember Nasra (the guy who wanted Canada Air Charter this summer) worked with icelandair last winter, and Icelandair offered YMX-PAp 3 weekly with B752/B753 aircraft.

Apparently it was most succesful, but Nasra going bust this summer due to the foiled CAC, was the reason for TS doing YMXPAP with haiti air charter I assume!
