Help With A Cleveland Arrival

Thu Feb 13, 2003 7:29 am

Hey guys. I know this is kind of a longshot but I figured I'd try.

I was listening to my scanner when I heard a heavy landing at CLE. The flight number was 31. Only problem is the callsign was so short it blended with the number. It sounded almost like "Varig 31 Heavy" but the pilot was American and Varig has never been here. It was right about 5:20 Eastern Time. Any help is appriciated. Thanks!

Go to Flytecomm.com, and type in CLE, it will give you all of the arrivals for the day today.

Here are the only flights that I see to Cleveland with a "31" in them for the day...

American Eagle 831 from New York
American Eagle 31 from Chicago
Continental Express 2231 from Columbus
" " " 2131 from Syracuse
Continental 1831 from Boston
" " 1431 "" ""
Fed Ex 1731 from Indianapolis

When you say 5:20 Eastern time do you mean am or pm? Because the Fed Ex flight came in around 5:40 am and it is an A300 which makes it a heavy

It was 5:20PM and I don't think it was FedEx. The number was definatly just 31 and there was a heavy on there. Thanks for the help, guys.

Considering the weather and winds in CLE last night and this morning, is it possible that 1731 faced a major delay?

Also flytecomm isn't foolproof... If someone flies in and doesn't file a flight plan, then the flight won't show up (tho you would think a heavy would file prior to flight to give everyone a heads up)

It may be a military flight. I believe that there has been a lot of tanker activity lately; perhaps a KC-10 or 135. They generally have two digit flight numbers (31/61/11/etc)..

Just a thought. Did you notice if they called "Gear Down"?

No, they didn't call gear down. But you might be right, lots of KCs flying over here lately. It was followed within a few minutes by a NASA T-38 as well.

With Code Orange the planes are up doing patrols again like they were after 9-11-01, so it could be an AWAC or a tanker

I had a two day trip that started yesterday at 10:00 am and there was a Qatar Airways A-340-200 at terminal A. It left around 12:00, im sure that was the heavy that came in on the 12th. It was covered with snow, you could tell it was a long way from home!

Another rich world leader in for a check up at the Cleveland Clinic I presume. It was great when the leader of the UAE was in. He brought his fleet of I believe 4 747SP's in to transport himself and his entourage.

What's that callsign? Just Qatar or do they have some rediculous scrambled eggs callsign?
