SYD:UNITED Airlines

Fri Feb 14, 2003 2:03 am

I was talking with an Aussie friend and she said that UAL is pulling out of SYD, is this correct? I checked the search and didn't see anything that could answer my question so here it is. She said she was in SYD and heard it on the radio, if they were wouldn't they have announced it here(USA) by now?

thanks.

I don't know about that. Qantas serve LAX 33 times a week or something similarly incredible. That said, I wouldn't fly on a US carrier if you paid me, no way. So maybe people (especially Aussies, who make up the majority of US-Aus pax) are flying QF and UA are half empty? Anyone flown the route lately?

I should add UA have a five storey office building in Sydney, I don't think they could just pull out. It's not a station manager and some third-party contractors, UA's commitment to Sydney is quite hefty. Plus they have a code share with the excellent Virgin Blue.

On balance, while no-one is flying US carriers if they have a choice right now, I doubt UA are pulling out of Sydney anytime soon.

Ual777contrail...I think your friend is confusing the recent story that speculated UA would lose its entire 747 fleet and be forced to pull out of Australia. As most stories like that seem to do, the speculation became fact. Although many of the 747s will be leaving the fleet, enough will remain for Australia and longer, heavier routes to Asia like SFO-HKG. I think NZ's departure from the LAX-SYD route will ensure UA remains in SYD.

Yeah this has been discussed a few times. UA publically denounced this as being true and reaffirmed their commitment to Oz.

Everytime I fly the route on UA the loads are pretty good. However that was no the case right after 9/11/01. The loads were empty! Contrail are you going to SYD soon? I am trying to go again in march with a companion. I hope the loads are not as they are now! Pretty packed leaving the USA!

UA never "affirmed" their commitment to New Zealand before pulling out.

No I am not, have a friend at work who was in SYD nad said we are pulling out. I told her she was full of it, would like to go before my aviation career is over. And Hawaii as well.

Sydney is one of the few profitable routes for United right now. Auckland was not. United is not leaving Sydney...at least not soon.

In responce to them leaving because of the 747 fleet...United is trimming the 747 fleet, but atleast 15 of them will still be around.
