Southwest To Launch A BWI-SAN Flight

Fri Feb 14, 2003 3:45 am

PRNewswire is reporting that Southwest Airlines will introduce new nonstop service between Baltimore/Washington and San Diego on July 6, 2003, with fares as low as $99 each way. At the same time, the airline also will add its 12th daily nonstop flight between Baltimore/Washington and Providence, creating one-stop service between Providence and San Diego.

This will be the first Southwest transcon flight to San Diego. I think it'll be mostly for connecting passengers from the east coast, or DC area passengers. I don't think there's much traffic btw the cities of San Diego and Baltimore themselves.

Nice to hear, those $99 fares are hard to grab anyway, also I wouldn't like to fly in the middle seat on a 6 hour flight as SWA's seating plans does suck on busy routes. Just gotta be lucky and be the first ones to board.

I think we all hate that middle seat.

But at least on WN, even if you buy your ticket at the last minute (unless it's REALLY last minute) you've still got a great chance for avoiding the middle seat just by showing up a couple of hours early...

...of course, this is what makes free upgrades to first class nice -- but you've got to fly a lot to get them.

SWA is really building up their transcons from BWI. WOW!!! 12 flights from PVD-BWI, thats practically a shuttle route between the 2 cities

It doesn't seem to be in the schedule yet. But looking on July 6th, Southwest already operates 3 one-stop services, plus a Sunday only nonstop (flight 899)

I would imagine that there is a fair bit of traffic on this route. United operates twice daily from Dulles, and all of the other majors have a fair number of one-stop routings from all three DC area airports.

Believe it or not...760 daily passengers (380 each way) between BWI and SAN in the second quarter of last year. WN had just under 1/4 of the market for the route (roughly 90 daily O&D passengers). Interestingly, BWI-SAN had *more* passengers than DCA/IAD-SAN, likely due in large measure to fares being 40% lower on BWI-SAN. BWI has a great deal of potential for trans-con service; after all, it's no less convenient to the District than IAD and DCA is limited by the perimeter rule (with 6 daily exceptions).

I wonder if we'll also see BWI-OAK and BWI-SEA this year, just as we saw MDW-SEA and MDW-OAK added last year. BWI has been a fantastic growth market for WN in the last 10 years; it seems like the biggest limitations for them in Baltimore have been staffing and getting gates built quickly enough.
