Maybe not, with the Ryanair/Buzz pullout, I would have thought Bournemouth would be pretty high on the list....

What will be the implication for bmi's Star Alliance operations here?

Well all I can say to Manchester passengers is - continue going over to Liverpool for cheap fares, because if EMA is anything to go by EasyJet are almost always going to be cheaper than BMIBaby.

Will the planned BMI flights from MAN to BRU be operated by BMIBaby, like the flights from EMA to BRU at the moment?

Thanks

As far as I can gather, the exisitng bmi MAN flights will not be transferred. As for possible new routes from bmi/bmibaby, the only certain one is a baby service to BFS....more routes to be revealed on Monday.

Their press release has this pertinent paragraph

"Destinations to be served, by the first two bmibaby aircraft to be based at Manchester, will be revealed by Tony Davis, managing director of bmibaby, at a press conference at 10.00am at the airport on Monday 17 February 2003. Seats will also go on sale at this time with Internet fares starting from just £12.50 one way. However, the airline has already indicated that Belfast International Airport will feature as one of the destinations to be served. "

Woohoo! Are they to be flying to Belfast? A few recent press releases indicated that this was very likely, and I sure hope so. I have to go from Sheffield to Belfast quite regularly, and normally its BA from MAN. I tried easyJet last week but its such a pain to get to LPL from the train station, while you get off the train inside Manchester airport itself. WoohoO! I'm quite chuffed now Smile

Great news! Hopefully bmibaby will offer lower fares than it currently does. Competition is much greater at Manchester than at East Midlands and Cardiff, although I guess operating costs would be higher at Manchester. Intersting to see if they can pull it off, I hope they do!

Big gamble this by MAN Plc. I can't actually believe they've done it.

Innevitably there will be commercial pressure on bmi baby to run the bmi regional Scottish routes. What they loose on the connecting traffic will be more than recouped with what they are able to (a) lift from BA and (b) the railways. It might not happen straight away - but I'm convinced it will happen

Once these services go, wave goodbye to any long-term aspirations for bmi to have MAN at the centre of a star alliance hub/spoke operation.

At the same time, bmi baby will then be giving Citiexpress a hard time on routes to Belfast, Scotland and possibly others - which is hardly going to assist any aspirations BA have to develop a hub at MAN.

...and that as they say is the gamble. MAN have put their amibitions to be a european hub on the line for the sake of getting a few more passengers to Beflast, Barcelona or whereever. As simple as that.
