Help! What Airline Flys GUM Or HNL To NAN In Fiji?

Sat Feb 15, 2003 7:37 am

I served a year as a missionary on the island of Pohnpei, Micronesia (PNI), which is a stop on the famous island hopper flight on Continental Micronesia (HNL-MAJ-KWJ-KSA-PNI-TKK-GUM). I go back every year or so and enjoy the flight, thus my username (I used to be BeechStarship, after my favorite aircraft).

Anyhow, while on that island I befriended a Fijiian family who had just arrived via Air Nauru, who used to fly NAN to PNI nonstop for about $300. They started a business that went belly-up, and need to return home. Unfortunately, Air Nauru went belly-up about the same time the business did, and Continental (now the only airline serving PNI) wants $2600 each to fly them to Fiji!!! The high price is because CO says they have to fly to LAX to get back to Fiji using a non-affiliate airline. There's four of them, and there's no way they can afford it...there's got to be a better way.

I have enough frequent flyer miles on CO to get them to either GUM or MAJ (25,000 miles each). Do any carriers serve both GUM and NAN (with stopovers, obviously)? I heard a small airline called Air Marshall Islands serves NAN from MAJ...can anyone confirm this or give me some contact info? A search on the internet revealed nothing.

Another option would be to get them to HNL, but CO says that nobody services NAN from there! Is that true? I find that hard to believe. MUCH appreciation for any help you can give.

Air Pacific, based in Fiji, has direct flights between HNL and NAN.

Polynesian Airlines, based in Western Samoa, flies from Honolulu to Apia, with connecting flights to Fiji.

Hawaiian Airlines used to fly from Honolulu to American Samoa - easy connect to Fiji, but I'm not sure if they still do it.

cheers

Me again.

Hawaiian still fly to American Samoa. The connection is a tad complex - Polynesian to Apia, then to Fiji.

Aloha Airlines flies from Honolulu to Rarotonga, with an Air New Zealand connect from Rarotonga to Fiji.

cheers

Nadi-Honolulu
Shouldnt be a problem. Air Pacific nonstop daily except MoTuTh (QF has codeshare seats on it). Connections possible with Air New Zealand (via Auckland), maybe Polynesian via Apia

Nadi-Guam
A bit more tricky. Try connecting via Tokyo. Continental / JAL / NH fly Guam-Tokyo, Air Pacific flies Tokyo-Nadi
Continental flies to Guam from Cairns. But I believe there isnt much of a nonstop flight between Cairns and Nadi.
Best Business Class: Royal Brunei. Best Economy: Singapore Airlines. First: please send money first!

Aloha now flies from Kwajeilen and Majuro to Honolulu as a foil to CO as well. They have also started service from HNL to Raratonga where you can get an Air NZ flight to Nadi, and they have some introductory specials on their www for this route.
It seems from your post that you have something like 100,000 miles spare - have you considered getting 2 or 3 of the people as far as possible on those points, leaving only 1 or 2 to pay for and hopefully a short/cheap segment for the ones on the redemptions, once they've got as far as they can get on the miles?

Air Marshall Islands withdrew their International services and now concentrate on domestic. Air Nauru is still flying, but no longer serve the MNL-GUM-PNI-INU route. (They had a suspension of AOC for 2 months only.) Solomons don't fly north or west from Honiara and Air Pac only go as far as there as well. Heading west to Japan and coming back is pointless as the fares will be a killer ex Japan - for that matter any one way fare is going to sting.

Good Luck. Cheers.
