What Happened To The Usps Hub At IND?

Sun Feb 16, 2003 6:46 am

I think the topic pretty much covers it

What happened to the USPS hub at IND since USPS doesn't do air ops anymore and has pretty much contracted everything out to FedEx?

I think you sort of answered your own question, but USPS did contract with Emery and Ryan international (there are so many Ryan companies- the cargo company, not the European low fair company or the charter company that flies to various warm spots from the Midwest, but the cargo company that flew the 727s) Emery of course went out of business, so they don't have that contract anymore, I am not sure what happened to Ryan International Cargo, but I don't see the USPS 727s anymore either.

I stand corrected. I went to DAY site and apparently Ryan International is the same one that operates cargo 727s and the charter passenger A320s and 321s.

Looks like there are quite a few Ryan International flights to Dayton for cargo- so maybe they put all of their planes in DAY after Emery closed down.

I don't recall Fed Ex having such a presence at IND before when Emery and Ryan were flying for USPS.

The United States Postal service decided to contract out their air freight, instead of maintaining their own air freight division. The contract went to FedEx and the Indy USPS hub was shut down this past summer. Most of the USPS cargo is handled through the FedEx Memphis sorting hub.

Sorry, I answered based on the title before realizing that you had answered your own question. As far as the physical USPS hub - it's closed, done, finito, history, a big piece of concrete with weeds growing up through it.

ZID- Any possibility of anyone looking to buy the physical buidling part at IND, or is it just going to sit silent.

I would think FedEx might be interested, but it is on the opposite side of the airport from FedEx's Indy hub.

I heard the building can only be used as an air freight terminal. A trucking company cannot use it unless they connect to airplanes. That precludes using the building as a warehouse.

Great agreement they negotiated.TC
