Volga Dnper Leasing 2 747's

Sun Feb 16, 2003 11:19 am

According to justplanes.com, Volga plans on leasing 2 747's for a new subsidiary airline they are working on. Who's 747's are they using? I was just on flight tracker and noticed them leaving MHV with a stop in BGR. Thanks.

It would seem that they are leasing 2 747-200s from Air Atlanta Icelandic. I'm not sure, but they may be ex-Virgin birds.

VI has not bought any aircraft as yet. I don't know where you got the information regarding that CX747, but check your sources again; it seems they have given you bum information.  Wink/being sarcastic

The subsidiary is still in the planning stages, and a tender for the aircraft will be called for in due course.

The aircraft (probably 747-400Fs) will be used for freight flights from Moscow to China; to counter the 3 weekly services offered by CZ (later to become daily).

The reason I know that no aircraft have yet been signed for, is that VI has not received approval from the Russian authorities to import the aircraft into Russia; this will be a reasonably long and drawn out process for the airline, which is why they will start studying ways to get around the import tax regime which stops a lot of Russian airlines from importing aircraft into the country.

VI is also in the process of trying to gain traffic rights to Western European countries and also USA/Canada. This will allow them to exploit the China-Europe and China-America/Canada markets.

What this would mean to the current VI fleet is that the Il-76TDs will probably be phased out, and will also mean another nail in the coffin of the Il-76MF/TF project, as VI was expected to be a major customer for the aircraft.

Perhaps they have not been approved yet, but who says that they can't fly them on someone else's AOC using a foreign registration?

I thought Volga-Dnepr was organising a tie-up with Atlas Air not so long ago. Wouldn't surprise me to find them in bed together.

I thought Volga-Dnepr was organising a tie-up with Atlas Air not so long ago.

5Y is the GSA for VI in the USA when it comes to American government charters for the An-124-100. Apart from this, VI still does it own sales/marketing in the American market for private enterprise. I think this has been an ongoing arrangement between VI and 5Y since early 2001. Whether this would extend to any 747 cargo operations in Russia is yet to be seen, but it could a way that VI could use to get around import tax regimes in Russia.
