This is a very detailed, informative article on SwissAir 111 and the Entertainment System manufacturer.

This is really fascinating.

One thing that the article does not mention is the extremely complex, technical challenge of designing airborne systems. Even a mundane, nonessential system like an IFE still requires all the standards and procedures used for designing much more critical systems. The article bandies about the word "incompetence" quite a bit, as if it were so easy to find really competent people who could work in this industry.

One thing I have taken away from this article is.....don't trust companies who have to use "beltway bandits" to hawk their products!

Well Delta-flyer, your statement about competent people irritates me a bit.... At the end of the day, the whole thing got an FAA approval. Does your statement imply, that even there are not all people competent?
This accident is in my opinion a showcase who illustrates, that there is never only one mistake or malfunction leading to a disaster. It always takes several things.
I'll never forget this day, when I heard the news that an airplane of "my" company crashed! Only the ones who experienced this may have an idea what I am talking about........

First they say it was a Jumbo Jet and later they go for MD11. It was an MD11 (HB-IWF) which crashed, not a Jumbo Jet (747) but maybe TWA800 was part of the confusion.

I also fully agree to "MD-11 forever" ...

Like MD-11 forever said, this IFE got an FAA approval, so I think this disaster could have been avoided had the FAA and also Swissair looked at the system more carefully.

Jumbo Jet is a generic name for any widebody aircraft. It's been associated with the 747 but I've seen it applied to everything from the L-1011 to the DC-10 to the MD-11. It's a bit presumptive to assume that, in such an in-depth article, someone confused two completely different accidents...

Finally I could find some time to read the whole report. It is very interesting, and well researched. What makes one wonder is the fact, that the FAA obviously knew about the bad business behaviours of some parties involved to this sad story. I wonder why they didn't check the certification process more in depth as it seems to be appropriate when one handles such a complex STC issue. As far as I know about FAA certification rules, the last signature comes from the FAA itself, not from any outsourced FAA consultant or whatever.
Another issue are the findings that the Canadian Transportation Safety board made concerning wiring materials and insulation blankets. Also in thos cases, the FAA seems to have acted very unlucky and too late, although the dangers were known..........
Will be interesting to see what comes out when the court cases are dealt with!
