NW Cancels 4 A330s?

Tue Feb 18, 2003 1:07 pm

I hear tell (via today's Airways News) that NW cancelled 4 A330s...

Anyone know any details? Did they cancel 332s or 333s?

Didn't they just transfer the order for some A332s from the A333s a couple weeks ago?

Did they cancel or defer?

Doesn't make sense if they cancelled (other than the fact of their debt)

They did just change the order.

But according to this, they cancelled 4. Doesn't say exactly when.

Cancelling 4 had to cost them a pretty penny.

Yeah, I read the same thing in airwaysnews online. It did not specify whether the 333 or 332. Given that the 332 number was just specified, it's likely 333 cancellations.

NW is really having a ball with the A330/340 orders...

15 years after becoming a launch customer, they confirmed the order, now they're cancelling some...

Oh well, just shows that launch customers doesn't always mean quick delivery  Big grin

I'm lead to believe, and I'm sure one of the forum's Northwest experts will be able to confirm or deny this, that the A330s being cancelled are from the original 1989 order.

When Northwest/Airbus struck the current A330 order deal in 2001, it was agreed that to protect Airbus' order figures, rather than cancelling the whole of the original order, they would cancel 4 aircraft per year until Northwest are relieved of their original commitment.

So the order which the cancellations form part of are entirely separate to those placed in 2001 which Northwest will actually receive!

As it currently stands Northwest have 32 A330 aircraft on order, 24 were ordered in 2001, and 8 remaining from the original 16 ordered in 1989, which will continue to be reduced at 4 per year until 2005.

If I'm wrong please correct me! I thought I read it here but a quick search hasn't brought anything up in the archives...

Crosswind, you are correct. Airbus has some rather bizarre practice of keeping some of the old orders in their book. Another example is Air Inter's original 333 orders. These old orders have been slowly being 'canceled' as Air France starts taking delivery of the 332 very much like NW's original 333 orders.

Not to mention that old Iraqi Airways A310 order - don't think they'll be needing those any time soon  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Damn, I wanted to see em in MSP! Oh well, NWA is doing bad, they have like 100,000 employees out! (sarcastic maybe, unless that number is true which it probably is!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

You're going to still see plenty of A330s at MSP. We've determined they'll still get all 24 of them. These are cancels for older orders for bookkeeping purposes.

It makes sense in a way... and really there's not much for NW to go along with, it takes no effort on their part. A form letter and a signature.

NW may have had 100,000 employees TOTAL at their most robust point. I assure you they don't have 100,000 out.

NWA is also doing well compared with some others.

I really don't think that the cancelled NWA A330s will make much of a difference to the people at DTW or MSP, both airports will see a lot of them still. I also think when things start going good again for NW, they will add them back on and that will probably come before they are done taking the 24.

HlywdCatft-

The orders they're cancelling is from their original batch and cancelling them was part of the agreement to buy the new ones.

It all balances I believe.

The orriginal batch as in the ones from like 1992 or whenever they ordered them first with the A340s?

I thought they took care of cancelling those orders when they announced that they were going to buy those 24 in 2001.

HlywdCatft-

Read the whole thread. The agreement called for them to cancel 4 a year apparently.

It says something about the state of the airline industry when it is better (?cheaper) to cancel a "launch customer" order, and re-order at present day prices!!!!

Guys,

Correct me if I am wrong someone but I read on another board that QF are swapping 3 of their A332's to A333's.

Could they be the NW orders?

Cheers,

Heh, no, no I don't think so.

But good for QF if they wanted to trade up. I hadn't heard that. So what does that make the count for each model again?

Hah while you're finding that out, maybe you can solve my nagging QF engine problem.  Nuts
