NWA 747 Outta ORD

Wed Feb 19, 2003 7:34 am

Is it true Northwest used to fly a 747 out of ORD? If so where to, and what version was it.

They used to fly the 747-200 from ORD to NRT and also had a daily ORD-MSP flight also using the -200 to reposition aircraft for the NRT flight.

NW used to fly ORD-AA), Japan">NRT with the 747-200 I believe. Don't know when they abandoned the route...maybe when AA started flying the route as well?

this is true, the flight number, not a/c, then continued on ord-bos in a 727, before ua and aa competed on the route

I think NWA operates cargo to ORD on a 742.

May be mistaken.

That's all I know. Going to DFW? Maybe, but most likely someplace else like LAX.

Back in 1974, I flew on NWA 747 to Tokyo (not NRT) with a stop in Seattle. The flight was JFK - ORD - SEA - Tokyo (don't remember which airports).

Also, I flew many times on NWA 747 from Miami to MSP with a stop over in ORD. that was until around 1978.

I love old timetables, and it just happens that I have a September 4, 1984 Northwest Orient timetable. The following 747 flights were offered out of ORD:

Flight 437 to MSP, dep 3:00 p.m. arr. 4:05 p.m., Daily
Flight 118 to JFK, dep 3:15 p.m. arr. 6:15 p.m. , Tuesday only
Flight 3 to NRT, dep 11:50 a.m. arr 2:40 p.m., Daily

Here are some other interesting 747 services Northwest offered in this timetable - this is not all-inclusive, just flights I thought were a bit odd from today's viewpoint:

MSP-DTW
JFK-DTW
FRA-LGW
MSP-SEA
CPH-ARN
CPH-HAM
CPH-JFK
DUB-PIK (Prestwick/Glasgow)
BOS-SNN
SNN-DUB
JFK-GEN (Oslo Gardermoen)
GEN-ARN
JFK-SNN
BOS-LGW
HAM-LGW
GUM-NRT

In 1984 before DTW was a NW hub, I knew someone who flew from Seoul direct to ORD on a 747 before transfering onto a 727 to come to DTW.

Isn't that odd? Transferring on NW at ORD to go to DTW?

Did NW have a hub at JFK back than? Seems like they had quite a few flights to Europe.

I flew ORD-MSP quite a few times in the early '90s, usually on the upper level of the 747.

In the early 1980s Northwest also had a scheduled 747 nonstop between Chicago and Washington Dulles. I can't remember, but this may have been only a few days a week and not daily.

Some time in the mid-late 80's I took a 747-200 DTW-BOS. Sorry, thats all the details I recall from it, wish I had the year and flight number.
