AA Domestic First Class: Opinions? Feedback?

Thu Feb 20, 2003 4:34 am

A work colleague and I are flying YYZ-ORD-SFO-ORD-YYZ this Friday for the weekend. My colleauge has (luckily) 2 Amercian Airlines first class upgrade certificates, which have been approved for us for the ORD-SFO-ORD sectors.

Our firm has never booked AA First before for clients, nor have any of us here flown AA First. SO, our question is,has anyone here flown AA First on their
domestic routes? If so, we're curious to hear your opinions and descriptions of it. We realize the service is most probably not on par with, for instance,
Air Canada's Executive First, but we're relieved not to be flying cattle class.

Feedback? Observations?

P.S: We've checked out "airlinemeals.net" for clues, but still would like to
hear from actual pax (passengers).

ORD-SFO is a mid-range line, so the service isn't all that super fancy. I haven't flown AA since December, when I did a couple of transcons in 3-class business (the same service as domestic first), and for the transcons, it's nice and closer to the type of service you'd see internationally.

Can you possibly do YYZ-JFK-SFO and back? Then you'd get the full transcon service. Otherwise, the seats are good, and service is okay, but nothing like international service.

I've been on AA First about 5 times in the past 2 months. I have to agree with Sllevin regarding Transcon vs. Mid-con service. Transcon is better, with menus and service in courses. Some mid-cons will give you everything basically on one plate. In terms of drinks, I've found the F/As to be pretty attentive and refill wine glasses/drink glasses quite often.

In terms of seat comfort, it depends on the aircraft you are flying. If you are on an MD-80, I recommend against using the upgrades for that flight. The seats aren't that wide nor do they have a lot of legroom. 757: The brown seats are allright, but nothing great. 767 with business: Good seats and legroom. (A 767-300 non-Hawaii configuration would be the preference).

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

Our ORD-SFO sector is a B763; our SFO-ORD sector is a B738.

I am going to St. Thomas in 2 months from PHL via SJU. I think i am scheduled to fly a 738 and 752. How is First Class on those planes?

"Can you possibly do YYZ-JFK-SFO and back? Then you'd get the full transcon service."

Not a desirable option for us, as AA does not offer YYZ-JFK direct service anymore. Only YYZ-LGA service. And trust me, on a Friday late afternoon, the last thing we are up to is transfering from JFK to LGA, especially with stricter U.S. airport security measures in place.

Try checking out the different aircraft and seating configurations for AA's fleet on http://www.seatguru.com

It gives little information about the level of service, but tells which seats and which aircraft are the most desireable.

It has fleet arrangements for AA, DL, UA, U, and NWA - it's a great website!

I've enjoyed first class on both the 738 and 763 with AA. I just went in the new "business class" of a 767-300 transcon LAX-JFK (they removed the first class section entirely and have a great biz class section).

If you're 763 is in the international configuration, or this new "non-first" configuration (not the Hawaii version though), definitely try it. I think you'll be happy with it.

Our ORD-SFO B763 is in a 3-class configuration - International (or so Sabre system is showing/displaying as of today). The space (legroom) looks very good, and we're very much looking forward to it. As long as the wine is chilled, and the cheese is zesty!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In my humble opinion, AA has one of the best First Class in the US. The flight attendants are usually pretty good, and your 763 flight should have some nice seats. The only gripe I have is that the food is usually something that you would expect to recieve in coach---pizza, hot sandwiches, etc...not exactly "first class" foods, they taste good and the portions are pretty large and filling. Have a good flight, it should be good.

Jcs17, thanks for the bon voyage!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

And I have to laugh at your description of the AA First Class menu, as I recall my days as a Worldways flight attendant. Twice our crew "positioned" (crews flying as rev pax on other airlines to a destination, where they "pick up"
their carrier operated sector) YYZ-ORD-MEX on Amercian. This was 1989 and 1990. On both occasions, our crew was upgraded to AA First Class (B-727-200) from ORD to MEX, and I clearly remember the dinner on both flights was a hamburger and fries! I kid you not. The AA FA told us it was a "gourmet"
burger.....ooooohhhhh! LOL. I must say though, that burger was pretty
darn good, and filled our tummies.

Jcs17,

Yep. Just put that there burger and fries on a china plate, and you got yerself
a 1989-1990 American Airlines First Class din-din! Hmmmmm, does look familiar (rubbing my chin).

Alas, I am sure AA has improved their FC menu somewhat!?

I can assure you that on at least the flights I've been on the menu has been better than a hamburger. I've actually found the meals to be quite good (generally a chicken choice, pasta choice, or beef/fish choice).

On Friday I had:

First course: Shrimp cocktail appetizer
Second course: Spinach salad made to order with various dressing & topping choices + choice of bread
Third course: Macadamia encrusted chicken (very good)
Dessert: Hot fudge sundae with whipped cream, nuts

(And of course all the wine & kahlua I could handle).

This was on an LAX-JFK transcon, and the choices will probably be more limited ORD-SFO. But I can assure you it will not be a burger & fries.

I would save those upgrades and use them for international travel. I used to work Domestic routes and I would have upgrades in F/C on DFW-TUL and DFW-ELP flights. There's not even a meal served!!! I was amazed that people would waste their upgrades like that.

You might get a nice meal on that ORD-SFO leg, though. But you won't get any personal entertainment like you would on International. I love those DVD players.

If your SFO ORD flt is on the 763 with the FC seats , then pre-reserved
those seats in rows 2 and 3 . They sell that cabin and the ( previously
int'l C cabin ) as domestic First .
You'll get the "coffin" type sleeper seats .

"I would save those upgrades and use them for international travel."

This AA SFO flight is a one-shot deal for us, as our firm was offered
industry fares for staff use for Feb/Mar, 2003 only. American Airlines is attempting to "woo" our firm into signing a contract with them, and these
reduced fares are a carrot dangling on a string, if you will. Our company's air contracts for International travel are with Air Canada, Air France, Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific. For my personal international travel, it's primarily
Air Canada (for my Aeroplan miles) and Lufthansa, with a little Air France
thrown in for good measure.
