A340-600 Tail Cam On CX. - Unbelievable View

Thu Feb 20, 2003 4:01 pm

Wow! Airbus and/or CX have really done it right this time. ( I don't know if SA or VS have the tail cam on their A340-600's which show on the PTV's)

With the wide angle lens on the top of the tail you could see the entire aircraft on the PTV.( except the tips of each wing). I felt like there was a chase plane following us to get such a view. To see your aircraft flying from a camera above was the most awesome experience.

At altitude over the Pacific you could see the curvature of the earth, even the contrails of the 4 powerful RR engines. Take off and landing could see the flaps moving, gear going up and down. Even able to see the other traffic in the area during takeoff and landing. And since everyone is sleeping/trying to sleep you don't need to open the shades to look out. Actually the view is better on the PTV than looking out the window.

100 times better than the nose cams that we've seen in the past.

Only problem, the crew should make an announcement to turn to Channel 49 to see this. I think I was the only person watching it.

SAA also have this feed to their IFE system. They also have one camera in the nose that looks forward, great view for landing; and one camera that looks down, so even if you don't have a window seat you can still see whats happening below the aircraft!

What brand of IFE did CX and SAA select?

I'm reasonably sure that CX has the Matsushita but want confirmation.

Any word on if the RCA system on the VS 346 is still working well? It runs Linux, you know.

"At altitude over the Pacific you could see the curvature of the earth,"

I suspect that this has more to do with the wide-angle lens of the tail camera...

I don't know why more airlines don't do this. I agree it's an amazing view, especially for nutters like us. I bet with a view like that people wouldn't complain so much about the lack of windows on a blended wing body...but there's no tail.

SAA has chosen the MAS-3000 for the A340-600 and the MAS-3000i for the A340-300e.

Is there any picture of the wide angle lens view available?

"At altitude over the Pacific you could see the curvature of the earth"

It is very surprised that using the camera can see the curvature of the earth, but using nake eyes cannot!!! The camera is higher than the cabin, but comparing with the flying altitude, the difference is neglitable. I think the reason is the image distortion produced by the wide angle camera. Anyway, installing camera at the tail is a quite good idea.

I'm really wondering why nobody came up with this idea earlier, the sight especially during the take-off and landing must be great.
