Leeds/Newcastle/Cardiff - BY Reshuffle

Thu Feb 20, 2003 6:33 pm

Some of you may be interested that booking trends have caused a reshuffle in aircraft allocation for the Britannia Summer 2003 season already.

Leeds-Bradford is to get a based 767-200 for May and June (normally BHX-based which is being replaced in Brum by the "Leeds" 757).

Newcastle are losing the 767-200 to Cardiff, to be replaced by a 767-300 from LGW (where Cardiffs 757 ends up).

High demand for the sunshine from the regions this year, nice to see. Keep booking folks  Big grin

LGW,

Thought you might say that!!

Would love to put your mind at rest but this has only just been announced and so the specific schedules have not been updated yet (LBA is still showing 752s all season, for example!). Maybe give it a week or two for them to update things. The 752 will presumably just replace 763 routes with the weakest bookings.

Really good news this summer at NCL. With MyTravel and now Britannia increasing capacity. And also MD Airlines basing an a/c there, along with the easyJet base opening.

Where are they going to park them all though GKirk?! Big grin

I was chatting to a friend up north today who said that with all the aircraft based at Leeds this Summer incl. 2 x Jet2 737s, 1 x MyTravel 757 (up from an A320 last year), 1 x Britannia 757/762, etc.. etc... it is inevitable that at times every single stand will be occupied.

Great to see this "expansion" though. Shame they have to pull the bigger aircraft from the likes of Gatwick and Birmingham to achieve it. Rumour round the mill though is that BY (or should I say TUI!) are only a couple of months away from an 80+ a/c deal with Toulouse (320/321/332 mix probably).

Does this mean you're gonna go "side-stick" then Rick...or are you gonna move on with the Boeings...?

BTW...always read your posts with interest, both here and in Tech/Ops. Nice to get the "inside story".

Maybe this was one of yours...

I seem to be getting a reputation on here for floaty landings!! Maybe I should move on to the Airbus after all.... Big grin

I don't think that was me in fact, the only photo I have found on A.Net which was definately one of mine is this one:

Morning flight Luton to Faro. Incidentally I flew that very aircraft (G-BYAD) to Luxor yesterday, though it is now in that ghastly blue

Not perchance on the 339A/B to/from MAN? At night you can appreciate the colour scheme better i.e. you can't see it if viewing from a distance like a mile away  Wink/being sarcastic

Didn'y BY rule out the A320 about 3 or 4 years ago in favour of the 737-800, after wet leasing (?) a Translift machine for the summer?

David,

No it was the 507A/B from LGW. BY did rule out the A320 after the Irish lease (1999?) but since the TUI takeover fleet decisions are no longer made by the airline itself, which is now run from a central "Airline Management Unit" in Hanover. The correct aircraft for all the "Airlines of TUI" must be chosen, and with an overall order of 80 or so aircraft the group can get a good deal from either manufacturer. Centralised maintenance across the airlines and a single fleet "type" (i.e. Airbus!) will save lots of money. Will be surprised if Boeing gets the deal (which would be a 737NG and 764ER mix).

Donder,

On standby on Saturday so might get a ski charter or something. Otherwise doing a LGW-TFN-LGW tomorrow (never been before so should be interesting) then a LGW-TFS-LGW on Wednesday. After that it's time to use the rest of my holiday for the year - 2 weeks off skiing in the Rockies. Can't wait Big grin

Rick,
what are the times and flight number of the TFN flights tomorrow as i MIGHT be at LGW and would like to get some shots(insert floater joke here  Smile )

Considering that the likes of Hapag-Lloyd have the 738W,any chance BY could get the same?Must cost a bit to replace some 738s which can't be too old.TUI a possibly launch customer for the 739 with increased exits allowing capacity to jump over 200?Have to say that the 738 and 752 at LTN on Monday in TUI colours looked very nice although the only decent BY shot I have is of the Mooney!

BY257A LGW 08:55 > TFS 13:05
BY257B TFS 14:05 > LGW 17:55

In the 757 of course. Looks as though it will be a pretty foggy morning at LGW though, with light easterlies so 08R in use. Clearing up later but it will be dark by 17:55 of course...

Whilst Hapag do have the 737NG, Corsair operate the A330-200 already!! Granted HLF fly far more 737s than Corsair's two A330s. It's hard to tell, from a personal basis I would prefer the Boeing option (752/764 or 737/764) but the general consensus is that the Airbus proposal is the favourite to win the contract. Having a fleet of aircraft on which all pilots are qualified is just such a big selling point. There are also concerns about the 767-400 range capability for Germany to Cancun flights. With the jetstream in winter it just simply wouldn't make it non-stop sometimes, and that gets expensive.

Time will tell I guess...

Didn't know that Corsair were in TUI!Just remebered Neos as well-are they a young company cos they don't seem to be too big?

I'm going to stick a wager that they will order more 738s and some 739s but also go with the 332 because, as you say,the range of the 764 will be a problem although I doubt cargo plays a major role.Although TUI would obviously get a better deal if they went all A or B, I feel that their current fleet setups and the superior capabilities of the 332 would warrent a mix.
As you say, having a single pilot pool is a MAJOR plus, but would that be the case for the 32X and 330?If it happened it would surely be one of the first cases to occur like this?Plus, another advantage of the 330 is that an order could include some 333 options or a part 332/333 order whereas the Boeing widebody doesn't offer the same flexibility in this sense.
Interesting times ahead!

Have a nice flight tomorrow!
