Emirates Expanding Its Fleet Yet Again

Fri Feb 21, 2003 11:08 pm

According to today's Aviation Daily, Emirates is going to order more A380s by mid-year possibly along with 773ER and extended range A340s. The article stated that Emirates will also have a dedicated terminal at Dubai by 2005.

Sorry, I could not provide a link.

Interesting news... though this order has been more than a year in the making.

I'm amazed at the number of A388s this airline plans to operate. Also, if they order the 773ER, that'll make the A345 something of a sore-thumb oddball in their fleet.

Maybe Boeing would be keen on another of its famous "SQ-F.U." A340 replacement deals Big grin

*here's hoping anyways*

I agree with you CB. I am amazed at they are planning to order 22 A380s. I also would love to see the A340s turned into beer cans. I don't like 340s very much.

Objectively speaking, I think the 345 will still fit in their fleet. They will still have RR-powered 332s so they would not be as redundant as you might think.

Nor do I... that, and your former statement just earned you a spot on my respected list, hilarious! Big grin

Though if EK orders the 773ER, then retrofits their remaining 777s to the GE90 (as is speculated/expected)... it would still seem sort of an oddball.

Heh CB, I bet he actually has a reason for disliking the A340.

You just have an ETOPS hard on.

They're both good planes. Worthy competitors. You should root for both of them.

I dont think that they will have a problem filling 22 A380's, but instead might have a problem filling the 773's. My reasoning for this is that they will have enough high capacity routes to warrent A380 service. Remembering that a lot of their traffic is connecting from Asia to Europe they should be able to send A380's to cities such as London, Paris, Frankfurt, Honk Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Kuala Lampur, and Sydney among others. For the routes that require more then 1 flight a day, then could supplement with the A332's or A345's. Also I believe that 2 of the A380's are freighters. So in this breif paragraph I think I essentially accounted for 10 or 11 A380's and I am sure as the travel market increases managment will be able to find home for the other planes. Also they wont be all delivered for many years, so this gives managment a lot of time to think about where the planes shall fly to. The reason I said they might have a problem finding routes for the 773's is that after the A380's take over the major routes, the A332's will probobly be sufficient for the smaller cities.

CB,

Are they serious about re-engining existing 777s? That seems like it would be horribly expensive and they would have to sell or lease the RR engines.

Gigneil,

I am afraid my reasons for preferring the 777 to the 340 are not real noble. I generally prefer any Boeing to any Airbus. In my mind, the 340 (particularly the 342/343) is the winged-epitome of all that is France and I do not like France very much.

Objectively speaking, Airbus builds some fine aircraft particularly the 332, 319, and 320. I think the 332 is a better aircraft than the 764. As for the rest, I think Boeing builds aircraft that are equal or superior to the Airbus competing product.

I will always root for Boeing over Airbus.

Sigh. I had hope. Oh well.  Big grin

Jaws- 2 of those 380s are freighters.  Smile I bet a future order for 380s includes more freighters.

Donder-

I don't think they are, and I don't think they care.

Qatar isn't, and they aren't planning on being so for years and years.

Both countries view their airlines as engines of economic growth and as advertisements for their trade zones.

It is kinda sad that airlines like UA USAir etc have to care about being profitable.

By the way does airbus plan to stop production of the 343 anytime soon since they have the 346.

I'm sure he does... there are plenty!  Laugh out loud

Are they serious about re-engining existing 777s?

According to Flight International, Air&Space, and a few other sources they are.... but only if they order some of the 777NGs, which they are expected to. What helps is that they've had quite a few problems with the Trent892/Metco ordeal, and lord knows the Trent890 is no great engine for dry/hot -200ER operation.  Sad

That seems like it would be horribly expensive

Um, since when did EK ever care about that??

It is kinda sad that airlines like UA USAir etc have to care about being profitable

True, but I predict that some moron here will still say something along the lines of "well, why cant UA & US have service like EK does??" within the the next hour.......  Insane

That's like asking Boeing if they plan to stop production on the 73G now that the 739 is out.....

...or the 772ER now that the 773ER is out.

In fact, a new version of the 343 with enhanced FBW controls, new engines, LCDs in the cockpit, and other improvements, will be going to Swiss in the not to distant future.

Hello,

In the event Emirates would opt for the GE90 to power its 777 fleet, the likeliest option would of course be the replacement of the Trent-powered airplanes with new, GE-powered aircraft and not engine replacements.

I am glad to see Airbus and Boeing's planes are flying together . I disagree with some comments make that Boeing are better then Airbus planes . I feel that a passenger point of view , Airbus planes are better in terms of comfort and the 2-4-2 layout and asking the pilots , most of them preferred Boeing's system . Well , you have the pro and con . If you ask me ? I love both A330 and B777 . They are great planes , great to see EK flying both planes .

Emirates are counting on Dubai becoming the Singapore of the Middle East - a hub city in the middle of a rich, dynamic region.

Whether that comes to pass is another story.......but if Saddam is removed (as is looking increasingly certain) the Middle East might finally fulfill its destiny.
