A New Republic Airlines?

Sat Feb 22, 2003 4:44 pm

I'm sure that either A) this is not airline operations related or B) a hoax of some kind. But still.

Check out http://www.republicairlines.com

Granted, there isn't anything there. But bookmark it for future reference. Does anyone know anything about it?

Actually, Matt, it is not likely to be a hoax, but may not be going anywhere either.

The URL, http://www.republicairlines.com, is owned by Wexford Capital, LLC, the parent company of (among many other things) Chatauqua Airlines. In addition, though Wexford is based in Greenwich, CT, the phone number shown on the webpage you've linked is...

...Chatauqua's.

The URL record was created on September 13, 2001. This may be an idea whose realization will never come. But, for what it is worth, it is owned by an entity which is already in the airline business, and which has the ability if they so choose to start another airline at will.

From hoovers.com

Republic Airways Holdings' constituents are some of the biggest airlines in the US. Through its main operating subsidiary, Chautauqua Airlines, the company provides connecting flights for American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and US Airways. Using a fleet of 50 Embraer regional jets and 17 Saab turboprops, the airline serves more than 40 cities in the US and Canada. Chautauqua plans to phase out its turboprop planes and replace them with the more efficient regional jets. Republic Airways began operations in 1998 when it purchased Chautauqua. America West ceased its partnership with Chautauqua in 2003 to save on costs. Investment firm Wexford Capital owns Republic Airways Holdings.

It seems Republic Airways is just the holding company for CHQAir.

If you go to http://www.flychautauqua.com you will notice "A Republic Airways Company"

I would think that NWA would have the rights to the name of Republic Airways?

Unless they (Northwest) specified it, Im sure the Republic name is availbale.
Actully Northwest Orient merged with Republic Airlines (in 1996) (and dropped the "Oreint" as a result) which in itself was an amalgamation of North Central, Southern Airways and Hughes AirWest..
SO anything is Possible...
