Denver (DEN) starting May 21 with 2 daily flights from Atlanta (ATL).

Now that jetBlue has announced service to Long Beach, do you think AirTran will step up on the longer-range aircraft order to get in on the west coast as well? Or will they continue to stick with the timeframe they had in mind before jetBlue's announcement? Any new details about their choice yet? Thanks!

Rumors have been flying since the announced pull out from TOL that they are wanting (have wanted) to bring the RJs in here. Whether or not it happens...we'll see. I have a feeling it is going to take the move of the Port Authority two most vocal critics (of the Port itself) on the Board...the Airport Committee Chair and the newest member, former Mayor Carty (God help us all). Hopefully they'll uproot the current Air Service Development manager - or whatever his title is - that believes in reduction of capacity to improve load factors and not new service.

The same four western cities keep rearing their heads (LAX, LAS, SFO, PHX). Even Fornaro and Leonard have spoken of them in their recent webcasts. However....as far as midwest/east coast cities goes, maybe YYZ and OKC soon...

Haven't heard any plausible rumors recently, but some suggestions:

AUS--growing, economically strong upper-medium size market with no low-fare service to ATL. Same for SAT. In both cases, WN runs only one daily to MCO and none to FLL. Start either at 3x ATL, 1x MCO, 1x FLL

STL--who's afraid of the big bAAd wolf? 3x ATL and 2x FLL. WN runs 3x daily to MCO so skip that one.

IND--medium size market smack in the middle of its state. 3x ATL , 1x FLL and 1x MCO. WN only runs one daily to MCO and none to FLL.

I'd suggest CMH, but it'd be tough for FL to offer five nonstops on day one. DL and WN have MCO and FLL well covered; it's unclear what FL could start with in addition to 3 daily ATL. WN has BWI covered.

All of these markets are not leisure-heavy, and offer good potential to fill that front cabin.

JetConnect--I'd suggest ALB, SYR, GRR.

Finally: We Washingtonians are sick of no nonstop-lowfare service to Dallas. Time for an end-run around the damn Wright Amendment. Two daily 717's on BWI-DFW would be a good start.

Jim -

That BWI-DFW route may be coming soon....definitely have heard some grumblings about it. Additionally, I think they're testing the market with a thru flt that operates each direction currently.

As for new jetConnect flts...Fornaro said specifically that AirTran does NOT want to mirror the majors with "RJ flights operating long haul". They want a small regional operation only operating flights under the 500-mile stage length.

MKE-ATL (for jetConnect) will probably end as soon as the ATL hanger gets built, and AirWisc can put some of their own MX guys down there. More likely candidates include JAN, BHM, TYS, GNV, and GSP.

My guess (and it's just that) is more Florida: Melbourne, Sarasota, Daytona and Gainesville.
I work for Southwest, but the views expressed are my own and do not necessarily represent those of Southwest.

They just got some DCA slots.
Have they announced where they'll be flying to from DCA?

BDL should be included. The Hartford/Springfield market is pretty large (DL flies 763s in there; AA, DL, UA, US all fly 757s in), and Southwest has a relatively small presence (due to a previous lack of space), with flights to TPA and MCO; one weekly flight to FLL. I believe that AirTran would be able to do fine with 2-3 717s daily on DL / KBDL), USA - Connecticut">BDL-ATL.

AirTran only got 4 slots at DCA, and can only use them to FLL, PBI, and RSW. (Four slots means only TWO departures a day). They're not sure they even want to mess with the hassle...and since it's use or lose, they may just be throwing them back in the pond for now.

BDL - AirTran tried twice to make BDL work, (including as ValuJet) and to no avail...however...I did hear recently, Scheduling&Planning was looking at it again to see if it would be viable now with 717s....so who knows...

Travatl:

Is it possible that FL starts say DCA-FLL service twice a day, and if they draw full loads go back to whoever controls the slots at DCA and petition their case for more slots, because of the demand?
From what I hear, DCA is trying to really incorporate the LCC's into their mix, and I'm sure if FL can make a valid argument to get more slots, they would allow it.. That is unless there's some kind of rule prohibiting them to get them... I dunno

If airTran puts those DCA slots to use, I think it will be double-daily FLL-DCA. Huge O&D market, and WAS is underserved from FLL, one of the two East coast destinations better served from MIA than FLL (the other is BOS). Plus, they have an excellent operation going on at FLL, it would compliment the existing route structure (ATL, GPT, BWI, PHL, MKE) nicely.

I think it would be a very wise idea to go up against ASA on some of the ATL-Florida routes, it would definitely bring down fares on those routes. TYS would be a smart choice to return to, as would JAN. BDL would probably be a good JetConnect city to BWI.

If AirTran uses the DCA slots to FLL only - it will have been a sham against the goal of getting smaller cities, that don't already have any service to DCA, nonstop flights. Great Plains was my first pick to get these - as they would have flown them in markets not currently served. Oh well, life isn't fair.  Smile
