While AirTran was operating the Havana charters out of Miami, pesticides had to be sprayed in the cabin prior to landing, and the empty bottles turned over to Cuban authorities....

I remember getting those in Thai International Airways from Europe and to Australia.

I was afraid I was going to get sprayed when I went to Australia this past July (Air New Zealand, LAX-SYD), but we weren't.

All airlines arriving into New Zealand are required to spray the cabin interior with pesticide. Most carriers that I have flown on do it overtly, ie walking down the isle with a couple of spray cans, whereas Air NZ pipe it through the airconditioning system.

I know AF and Star airlines do that from RAK,PUJ,CUN,VRA,DKR or SCU. What 's the problem, it's nothing for health ?

A few flights that i've been on into the United Kingdom have sprayed insecticide, Caledonian from Dalaman, Turkey and Emirates from Dubai. It's due to the country of arrival's policy to prevent any foreign creatures getting into the natural ecosystems of the country I presume - and depends on where the aircraft has departed from.

Air Jamaica MBJ- HAV close to final approach! All of a sudden a F/A was walking extremely fast down the aisle spraying "a harmless and oderless substance" explained the head F/A over the PA.

Very Strange I thought.

Every airline has to spray with pax onboard, it makes no sense to do it when the pax arent on board. It all depends on the flights origin and destination whether you will be sprayed or not.

If you are flying into the UK, disinsection as it is called is carried out on departure from the following countries with the airline I fly for:

Egypt
Turkey
Morrocco
Algeria
Gambia

AirLib used to do this from PPT to LAX once the door was closed and prior to departure.

I remember back in 1999 when I travelled from Gatwick to Barbados on a Virgin Atlantic 747-200, they sprayed the cabin with pesticides prior to landing. I think they may have done the same thing on the way back.

Jcs17 said that every airline has to do it, that's not entirely true. Purely Domestic carriers for example wouldn't need to spray the cabin.

As for international carriers, it all depends on the origin and the destination as to whether it's a requirement or not.

When you fly into Cuba, you always have to give them the empty can which is the only way they know that you have sprayed.

It is common practice at the airline that I work for to carry a half empty can of spray on the airplane to give to the Cubans. Its probably been 3 or 4 years since the last time that we have physically gone down the isle spraying away.

The authorities down their would always want to keep the bottles as they take them hope and use them for pest control. I would make it a habit of asking for the can of spray back which they never liked but always gave it back.

It seems to be a dying practice to expose people to these harmfull chemicals. The air is already bad enough on a airplane.

If these countries are so worried about bugs, why is it that the cargo holds aren't sprayed?

I have seen back in the day a few flies in the cabin and after a full cabin spray, they are still flying around and even escape into the tropics when we arrive.

This has happened every time I've been on an Air Niugini international flight into Moresby, I can't remember it happening on any other airline I've been on-not even QF into Auckland a couple of years ago.

Hey guys,
As said AirNZ have it through the air conditioning system, which in turn DOES do the cargo hold!
When i flew with soe Asian carriers...ie....KE, BR, FJ... they walk down the aisles and spray before landing...esp. in New Zealand, as we relie heavily on our agriculture!

Cheers

All flights arriving to Mexico from Central America, Caribbean or north South America must spray pesticide (ie TACA, Avianca, Cubana, LAB, etc)

As some pple have already implied, its not so much an 'airline' thing as a 'law' thing. I guess you have to look up the laws in question to find out whether you plane has to be de-bugged.

cheers

I remember that Air India did it as soon as we landed and got to the gate in DEL. I asked my mom what they were doing and she siad that they were spraying pesticides. I know that they went down and up the aisle twice.

On my last visit to India, I took KLM and once we landed and touched down, we didn't get sprayed. I wonder if AI only does this once they get to India

I flew BA from BKK to LHR often, they spreyed the cabin before pushback everytime. I don't remember if QF did it. I remember when TG had 747 flight BKK-DEL-LHR (now it's direct only) they spreyed the cabin almost imediately when they parked in DEL, and they spreyed again in DEL on the return trip from LHR.

It's not the airlines choice when to spray the cabin of aircraft, it is due to the arrival country's regulations for inbound aircraft from certain countries

It was quite clearly said on the times that I've been on a plane where the cabin was sprayed with pesticide that this was to "comply with UK civil aviation authority regulations." Again, this does not happen on all inbound flights to the UK, just the ones from certain countries which the UK feel the need to use pesticides to prevent some species of insects entering the country. The same rule applies to other countries around the world.

To the person who was wondering about cargo spraying, here is the official procedural information from AQIS

http://www.affa.gov.au/content/output.cfm?ObjectID=5A4B6063-2FC7-4E1E-8CBAD9FA7D78208D

All pretty good info, except they refer to McDonnell Douglas as McDonald Douglas  Laugh out loud

On my Sobelair trip to Cuba (Varadero) they sprayed the Cabin before landing. And also before our stop in CUN.

I wonder if AI only does this once they get to India

It is a requirement that all aircraft arriving into India be properly fumigated before the doors are opened. I've seen it done on every carrier I've flown into India over the last 2 years (UA, CX, AI, NW, KL).

Sean,

Then how come I didn't see them do it onboard KL when we landed in DEL? Although we came in 45 mins late unless there are times when you aren't supposed to do it? Maybe KL decided to do it after we left the aircraft? What is the process in AMS?

BA also sprayed our flight from CPT to LHR prior to landing at Heathrow. You could hear the snickers from the entire plane when they announced overhead it was a harmless spray (hopefuly not for the bugs).

Just because you didn't see it, doesn't mean that it wasn't done. Not all of the fumigation sprays are the powerful aerosols that Air India uses. KLM and Northwest both use a more concentrated spray that requires only 4 cannisters of deployment versus the 6+ that Air India uses.

I actually had a chat with the NW Purser about this last night on my AMS-BOM flight, so I assure you that they are required to spray the cabin.

Howabout rednecks on charter flights who don't bathe? I think they should spray a can of pesticide on each one of them. Or make them stand outside and get cleaned off with an airport fire truck foam sprayer  Smile

On my trip with Emirates to KUL they sprayed the cabin before takeoff from DAC, where we made a short stopover.

I think all international flights into Beijing (PEK), China now have to do that, not sure about other Chinese cities (haven't flown to other Chinese cities on an international flight for a few months time).
