QF Delayed RJ Decision?

Tue Feb 25, 2003 5:47 am

According to FlightInternational Qantas has delayed any Regional Jet decision to replace its BAe 146, and is probably adding more 717's instead....
Has anybody more on this?
Thanks

The looming war is an issue. Also the all Y class 733s may have taken some of the pressure off buying more 717s. They both do the same role. The 733s have 130Y (133Y when the coat locker is removed) and the 717s 115-117Y. That's pretty close in capacity.

I bet the 717's are alot cheaper to operate though. Qnatas is talking to Boeing about a big order to launch the 717-300. Qantas love this plane 717fan.

What type of regional jet would replace the 146? The ERJ 135/145 seems like the logical choice!

"Qnatas is talking to Boeing about a big order to launch the 717-300."

"Qnatas"? I suppose even the greatest fans can make typos. Do you have a reliable source for this?

"What type of regional jet would replace the 146?"

I'm led to believe that "replacing" the 146 depends on how the relationship with National Jet pans out. Also I think they would be hoping that on a lot of routes the 146s are used that there will be sufficient growth to eventually use the 717 as a replacement. Which means there will be a big gap between the Dash 8-300 and the 717-200. Whether that is filled by a "true" regional jet such as the ERJ 170/190 will be interesting. The 135/145 is too small to "replace" the 146s.

Apparently there is a EMB170/190 cabin mock up in one of the hangars in SYD.

Also wasnt the order supposed to be a joint BA/QF order? maybe it is BA that has delayed it.

Wasn't this in their report last week? I've seen something from QF (not media) stating the RJ replacement project is temporarily shelved and on the backest of back burners. Cited reasons include the NZ alliance progress.
Cheers.
