US To Begin MEX-PHL And MEX-CLT

Tue Feb 25, 2003 6:28 am

As part of its Latin America / Carribbean expansion, US has announced daily non-stop service to begin from both its PHL and CLT hubs on A319s.

Glad to see US continue to expand.

Also glad to see the expansion...

US had briefly considered serving SJO (San Jose, Costa Rica), from CLT I believe, it appeared as a future destination on their route map in the Attache magazine a few months ago but has since been removed...any news on whether they will try to start it again and why it was canceled/postponed in the first place?

Thanks,

I wonder if there is enough traffic for MEX-CLT.... I guess it will all be connecting flights... But is that really needed???? Isn't it enought PHL... I think the airline is not in the situation to try new "promising"! routes, but real and heavy ones.

You would be surprised by the size the mexican population is in the Carolinas. Mexicana Airlines announced they wanted to serve CLT also. With this news I don't know if they will do that now or not. For US Airways, to have plenty of connecting traffic to insure that A319 remains full would seem to be an advantage. Keep in mind for those not fimilar or who have never flown into CLT, that it is not a regional airport, it's a major hub airport just as important as PHL offering just as many flights or often more for US Airways and US Airways Express. I think CLT and PHL should share more international flights together. For the company, it is better not to put all your eggs in one basket. As a passenger, it would be much better to have the option to try and connect at another US Airways hub incase your flight gets canceled or there is a weather related problem at one hub instead of being completely stranded.

This seems to me to be a prelude to US Airways' expected STAR membership. This flight will allow US passengers to connect with MX ones...

Finally, US to MEX. I thought that this was always a void on their route map and I am glad to see it come on.

A good reason why PHL is the dominant Transatlantic hub as well as a caribbean hub is not only does it have many connecting paxs, but has many O&D paxs as well. CLT cannot support as many O&D paxs as PHL and thats why they only have 2 or 3 transatlantic flights.

While we are on the subject does anyone know what city has more weekly caribbean flts PHL or CLT? I know they have around the same number of destinations but its hard to tell because some destinations are only served 2 or 3 times a week.

Hope US gets the expected revenue on both flights, because Mexico is getting too many new flights to the US.

Does anyone know what happened to Northwest flight Memphis - Mexico City non stop??? It was supposed to start on February 8 and it disappeared from CRS two weeks ago. Did they cancel the flight???

Hi!

Good news!

About nine years ago USAir used to fly Philadelphia - Mexico City they even had a codeshare with Mexicana.

Now let's see how things work...

This is super news!

This part of the world and further south of the border has been a weak point in the US network.

Great news,go US!

Great news & probably an omen for future Star membership, as someone mentioned above!

As for PHL vs. CLT in terms of who has more Caribbean flights, I'd have to go with CLT. It seems that way, anyway.

I wonder if there are any check-in slots available at MEX, the area is pretty crowed. Or will they use Mexicana´s?

This is not the first time US Airways flies to Mexico City. In 1993-94, it operated a daily 757 service from CLT to MEX.

Us air never flew a 757 from CLT to MEX.

They had a daily flight to PHL and during the weekend to Tampa with a 727,
and before cutting MEX from their route network they opened a nonstop to Pittsburgh.
