Finally! RJ's Running SMF To SFO!

Sat Mar 01, 2003 12:27 am

Great news for Sacramento people--the EMB120's of the past are for the most part, no more on the short, 40-minute block flight between SMF and SFO. Skywest is now operating a schedule of 7 CRJ-200 and 1 EMB120 on the SMF-SFO route, with departure times of:

SFO-SMF
06:48 * (EMB120)
08:55
11:30
13:00
15:40
18:10
19:51
22:20

SMF-SFO
07:14
07:45 * (EMB120)
09:05
10:39
14:15
16:55
18:15
20:05

Considering how long you have to wait at the airport (i.e. "security"), wouldn't it still be faster, easier, and cheaper just to hop on I-80 and drive?

Not really...at best with no traffic, you might be able to make it of the bridge in the time that it takes to clear security at Sacramento, wait around for the flight, and then fly to San Francisco (given an hour checkin time). If traffic is really bad, ie: any morning, or game days, then you're hosed, and you'll be creeping along from Berkeley all the way through the city. Besides, Sacramento airport itself is a much easier and hassle-free option, even for a few more dollars.

The time factor at SMF is probably not due to security but rather to holds due to delays at SFO. Anytime SFO sees capacity reduced due to weather, congestion, etc. flights from the closest cities are usually the first held. So SMF, FAT, etc. feel the brunt of SFO problems. I've spent too many times in both airports experiencing those delays.

While I might consider a drive from SMF to OAK, I'm not sure I would attempt the Sacramento-SFO drive.

Once BART to SFO opens it might make sense to do the Amtrak Capitols to the Richmond station then a change to BART all the way to SFO.

The majority of the pax on SFO-SMF are connections. Very few travel this as O&D. Lately the ATC delays haven't been anywhere close to as bad as they used to be, but you still probably wouldn't save much time as a local pax unless you were driving at a heavy traffic time. I think one of the big problems with the Brasilias was the limited pit capacity. Many bags for these flts meant bags would need to be held off until the next one, creating a problem for the next flt. The RJs make this a problem of the past.

I know SkyWest flies CRJs into OAK / KOAK), USA - California">OAK from SLC / KSLC), USA - Utah">SLC as well as SLC / KSLC), USA - Utah">SLC-SJC / KSJC), USA - California">SJC. Don't know if they do from LAX / KLAX), USA - California">LAX or SFO / KSFO), USA - California">SFO.

I believe the CRJs operate as UAX on SJC-LAX and OAK-LAX. They were put on the routes to replace Shuttle.
