I will be at LHR next Saturday but I do not care if the deck is open or not because there is still the Hatton Cross spot, a lot more spectacular than the observation deck.

Patrick,

Aircraft will be using 27L for landing (over Hatton Cross) up until 1500 next Saturday (unless the wind is easterly).

No, it's the other way around!!

Head to Hatton Cross for approach shots in the morning/early afternoon. From 1500 onwards landings will be on the northern runway (27R).

I hope the weather is better than it was today-I got rather wet!

I am flying ORD-LHR-VIE in a few weeks, with almost a 4 hr layover. Any suggestions on somewhere to go spotting (inside or outside security)

Thanks!

Matt,

sorry for the misunderstanding, I think that I had a beer too much, thanks for the enlightenment.

Yes, if the spectator's gallery isn't open by then, there are plenty of good places to spot without breaking rules at LHR.

I will be in LHR next week. I am pretty dissapointed that the deck is closed but I can get very good photos from Hatton Cross too.

Still no sign of when the deck will open again.
Anyone have a clue?

After arriving into LHR from CAI on Wednesday, I had a three-hour wait before my onward coach departed. I thus decided to visit the observation deck but, as predicted, it was firmly closed, as it will undoubtedly remain until the Gulf crisis is over.

I think someone on this forum posted that it was shut for over a year when the Vietnam war was happening. Doesn't look like they've got any intention of opening that viewing deck in the next 3-4 months.

Just a question: if the observation deck is closed, how about the small cafetaria and the aviation shop ('Mach III'?)? Are they closed as well or what?

Greetings,

Haven't been down there, but the original post about the army being at LHR said that the Mach 3 shop was still open. The lower deck of the viewing deck is open (behind the glass window) but the top level is not? Is that right?

When I was there the actual door leading to the stairs was not open. Thus I do not see how one could visit the Mach 3 shop or the indoor viewing area.

Seems like a weird situation. So basically the shop and the cafetaria are left without revenues or what? Or are these just 'airport employees' that are put on sometyhing else when the observation deck is closed?

Since I am putting together a get togeether for the week of 11-14 Mar I have posted on my thread about the deck and hopefully it will reopenin the next week. If not then I am planning Hatton Cross or the Visitors Centre. If anyone can provide further info over the next week please post.

Cheers,

Sean
