Question About LAX-ORD On QF/AA

Wed Mar 05, 2003 2:08 pm

So now that Qantas is starting MEL-LAX-ORD and back... and American is codesharing on it.... can you buy a ticket for AA ORD-LAX-ORD on Qantas 747-400s... i mean i know airlines arent allowed to do that but if its an AA ticket isnt it just like American Airlines flying you and not Qantas... or AAs gettign the money for it?

I'd have to say NO, only because I was curious about that same question regaring the SYD-LAX-JFK route. I didn't know if I could fly a QF744 from LAX-JFK. And I can't. If you wanted to fly LAX-ORD with a Qantas name, it would have to be a codeshare flight QF3005.

Also, I don't even think the QF744's are going to ORD. I think they're just codesharing it. AA will use the 737-800 for LAX-ORD.

Qantas will fly it's own 747-438ERs to ORD 3 x a week as per it's press release and information to staff.

I'm not too sure that they will use the 744s on the LAX-ORD route. The timetable on the Qantas website says:

SYD-ORD

Flight(s): 149, 107, 11
1035am-700am
Boeing 747-438 Longreach

Flight: 3005
958am-353pm
Boeing 737-800
(Operated by American Airlines)

-------

MEL-ORD

Flight: 93
1025am-730am
Boeing 747-438 Longreach

Flight: 3005
958am-353pm
Boeing 737-800 or 767-300 (depending on day)
(Operated by American Airlines)

Oh, so you're saying that on the 3x weekly routes, the 744ER will fly the LAX-ORD route, and on the other 4 days, AA will take it over?

Will be the same deal as with the LAX-JFK flights. Both QF metal and QF code will operate on the routes.
Also look out for quite a few more new coded QF on AA metal flights into ORD to start coming into schedules.

Long before codeshares, BOAC had an Around-The-World service, in both directions, which had a routing LHR / EGLL), United Kingdom">LHR JFK / KJFK), USA - New York">JFK SFO / KSFO), USA - California">SFO AFB (HNL / HIK / PHNL / PHIK), USA - Hawaii">HNL TYO HKG / VHHH), China - Hong Kong">HKG etc., and v/v.

Because of 'Cabotage' we could not pick up/drop off pax between any two US airports. However we could carry them from LHR / EGLL), United Kingdom">LHR to anywhere using the above routing. Similarly we could pick up pax in JFK / KJFK), USA - New York">JFK (etc) and take them to TYO, HKG / VHHH), China - Hong Kong">HKG, etc!

So, our three times a week 707-436 was a great route, and I was very fortunate in working on it for three years - all the trips were 21 days!

Whilst things have changed a lot over the years, I reckon that cabotage regulations have not!

Re my previous message - whilst it may be great to see automatic decodes of three-letter airport codes, it rather upset the flow of my message!!!

I hope you can read between the lines (of decode)!

I'll post it again . . . it may work this time . . . without all the 'decode'!
