America West has initiated a new bonus program that aims at improving their reliability. This is similar to a program Continental had some years ago...

Hello everyone. Doug Parker here with the latest CEO hotline message.
By now all of you should have seen the communication from Jeff McClelland, executive vice president and chief operating officer, about our new performance incentive. I know all of you are trying your hardest every day to ensure we are providing outstanding customer service. Each of you has had a large part to play in our phenomenal operational turnaround over the past couple of years. This program is one way to reward you when the results of your efforts make America West an industry leader.
As Jeff explained, every month in which we are in the Top 3 in either on-time performance and/or customer complaints as measured by the DOT, employees will receive $50. Additionally, for each month we’re No. 1 in on-time performance, we’ll add another $50 to make the total payment $100 for that month. We had announced that the mechanics’ and stock clerks’ union initially declined to participate in the program. We’re happy to announce they have reconsidered and that now ALL
employees are eligible for the payments.
Finally, some of you have questioned how we can afford this program in today’s economic environment. The answer is simple – this program more than pays for itself. That is, if we can work together and move ourselves back into No. 1 in the industry in on-time performance, the amount we pay to each of you in bonuses will be more than offset by reductions in hotel/meal vouchers, FIMs expense and other costs. Furthermore, we should be able to attract a little more revenue. So let’s get working together to improve our on-time performance and customer satisfaction. If we do, we’ll all win.
