A Diary Of Friends: Stranded Yanks.

Wed Mar 05, 2003 4:23 pm

Just saw a show on PBS documenting the hundreds of passengers who were diverted to Canadian airports on Se11. Not bad program.
Cool aircraft footage at the beginning (and a bit towards the end). One thing I question, though - While showing all the various aircraft, they also showed a Pan Am 747. Now, do you suppose they kind of just slipped that in there for the sake of showing airplanes in the sky, or, was there actually a Pan Am 747 operating a flight that day?

They probably needed some extra footage and found some of a Pan Am 747. Whoever made the documentary probably didn't know that Pan Am (at least the original) has been out of business for over a decade now. You'd be surprised at how little some people know, A classmate of mine was talking to me about a month ago about my trip home and he hoped I wasn't flying on United because of their bankruptcy proceedings, he also proceeded to mention in the same conversation how Pan Am is the US airline and is not going out of business anytime soon, the sad thing is he was serious. I had a hard time trying not to laugh.

There is also a wonderful book, entitled "The Day The World Came To Town:
9/11 In Gander, Newfoundland". It was written by Jim Defede, and is a very
moving and compelling read. The author interviewed stranded passengers and crews of the various carriers/flights diverted to Gander that day. The book more than illustrates the incredible collective charitable spirit of the wonderful people of Gander. I highly recommend it.
