Latin American Services To Africa, Asia Or Oceania

Thu Mar 06, 2003 7:56 am

You know I am very curious when it comes to air links in Latin America.

Just for the record I would like to have the full list of air links between Latin America and Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Here I start:

Asia
MEX-NRT (JP) 2x
GRU-NRT (JP, RG) 7x
GRU-KIX (RG) 2x
EZE-KUL (MH) 2X

Africa
GRU-JNB (SA)
EZE-CPT (MH) 2x

Oceania
SCL-IPC-PPT (LA) 2x
EZE-AKL-SYD (AR) 2x

Anything else? I am sure there most be more flights between Brazil and Africa

You forgot:

SCL-AKL-SYD (LA) 3x

I think TAAG Angola flies from Luanda to GIG 1x weekly. TAAG at one time also flew to Havana, and I believe Cubana flew to Angola as well. In the past Varig flew to several African destinations such as Angola, not because there was extensive travel between Africa and Brazil, but for political reasons.

Varig's service between Sao Paulo and Tokyo Narita stops in Los Angeles.

Varig does not fly to Osaka, they fly to Nagoya. Like the Narita service, it stops in Los Angeles.

JAL's service to MEX stops in Vancouver; service to GRU stops in JFK.

LanChile flies SCL-AKL-SYD.

MAS service to EZE stops in CPT and JNB.

TAAG flies between Rio de Janeiro and Luanada, Angola once a week.

Varig is expected to launch service between Sao Paulo and Shanghai via Frankfurt in 2003.

LanChile is expected to launch service to Santiago de Chile and Tokyo Narita via either Madrid or Miami, in 2003.

There have been constant rumours LanChile will also launch an SCL-MAD-BEY-DPS-SYD service, but those died off recently.

AR is planning flights to Tokyo and Beijing through their mini-hub in Madrid. Supposedly by this June they will be in place, but we'll see if that's true

LA does not fly all the way to AKL and SYD. They code share it from PPT onwards with QA.

Cubana must have had the most exotic routes in the past I remember reading in some 80's Cuban magazine some of Cubana's destinations
I might be wrong but I sort of remember
-Istanbul
-Baghdad
Did they ever fly to these cities or is my mind playing tricks on me?

No, they fly all the way to AKL and SYD. 3x a week. They inagurated this service on 1 July 2002 as a replacement for Qantas' own SYD-AKL-EZE service.

Dear MAH4546,

I am sure you are right. However, in Lan Chile's web page they indicate it is a codeshare flight.
Amadeus and Travelocity do not list SCL-AKL-SYD as a direct flight, meaning you have to change planes in PPT. It is not Qantas anymore, but AirNZ.

Pzuirta1,

Yes, it does list it, but thier route map is out-date.

LA 801 operates SCL-AKL-SYD on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. The Qantas codeshare number is QF 322.

LA 800 operates SYD-AKL-SYD on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The Qantas codeshare nubmer is QF 321.

There are some shots of LA's beautiful A340s at AKL in the database, but none from SYD.

Hi,

Aerolineas Argentinas did a special charter to China two weeks ago. They used a Boeing 747 (LV-OEP) and covered the route Madrid-Almaty-Beijing with mainly Spanish businessmen. I don't know if it was a sort of test flight or just a charter from Spain.

By the way, when Varig flew to HKG, the route wasn't GRU-LAX-HKG, it was GRU-GIG-JNB-BKK-HKG with the MD-11 a couple of times per week (I can't remember the exact number but I don't think it was more than 3). What a flight, especially if you originated from GRU!

It's good to see air services between Latin America & Asia increasing steadily. China & Japan are the biggest trade markets for South American companies.

First VARIG flight to HKG was made with 747-400 and then with the MD11.
I belive that RG made that route from 94 to 98.
The origin of the flght was GIG and stop in GRU-JNB-BKK-HKG

Korean Air used to fly to GRU via LAX with 747-400.

SAA flew from JNB to EZE with 747-200 and SP for 2 or 3 years as QANTAS ,with 747-400 from SYD to EZE via AKL.

Don't forget Vasp, they used to fly twice a week GRU-LAX-KIX (Osaka) and GRU-LAX-Seoul with MD11.

VASP also used to fly, GRU-CMN-ATH a while ago.... but shortly after that they started doing it non-stop, then later on, the flight was discontinued!!

About the rumors of RG starting new service to Shangai via Frankfurt, that's now in stadoff since the recent annoucement of the Merge between TAM and VARIG.

Actually, part of the terms of the proposed mergers include opening the China route.

Technically CCS-TFS (Caracas-Tenerife) is also a LatinAmerica-Africa route. Canary Islands are Spanish territory but in Africa.
This route is covered by Santa Barbara Airlines and Iberia (1x each)

Chepos,

Your mind is not playing tricks on you, Cubana did fly to Istanbul and Baghdad in the 80's and early 90's, also on their itinerary to Africa were the cities of Sal (SID), Cape Verde, Maputo (MPM), Mozambique, Bissau (OXB), Guinea-Bissau, Luanda (LAD), Angola and others that I can't remember.

Wow! Cubana did have an extensive route system based on subsidies from USSR and political ties... Nevertheless, impressive to have a Latin American carrier with such flights.
