Your First Tristar Flight....

Fri Mar 07, 2003 9:18 am

When was the firsttime you flew the DC-10? What airline was it on? From where to where?

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was flying TWA from Hartford to St. Louis. We left HAR in the morning. I was just a kid then. I remember we went to the Admirals Club before the flight. The agent gave me a deck of cards! (When's the last time THAT happened!?)

We were sitting in coach, but back then their was lots more legroom. The seating at the time was 2-3-3. For breakfast I had pancakes and sausage. The stewardess even came by and gave me a little activity pack!

In addition to TWA, BN also had a hub at STL. They flew mostly DC-9's. It was a different world then!

OK, enough of the nostalgia!

Not to nitpick, but I thought the Tri-Star was the Lockheed L1011 Tri-Star.

In this case, my first flight was an evening flight on TZ from LAS to IND on the infamous "Big Ed." It was a slow night, got my own row and even the full can of Coke *gasp.*

I agree. On Delta, Tristar was put on the #2 Induction.

Tristar - 1979 Miami to Freeport (Bahamas) on Eastern Airlines.
DC-10 - 1981 San Francisco - Honolulu on Western Airlines.

Wasn't sure whether you wanted Tristar or DC-10, so you got both my '3-holer' first flights.  Big thumbs up

My first Int'l,widebody, movies flight - Delta L1011 CVG-ZRH July '95 . I can still remember seeing all those L's lined up @ CVG going to Paris,Rome,London,Zurich. I was never on a widebody before. I even remember that the movie was 'Outbreak' and there were free drinks!
I just wish I got the reg #'s. I remember that I was a little peeved that we weren't on a MD-11.

My first TriStar flight was on board a Hawaiian Air flight, HNL-SFO. I was actually supposed to be on an American DC-10, but I missed my flight. Good times!

Along the same vein, Zrs70 did you ever have the chance to have your first flights on the
Douglas Constellation
the Lockheed Coronado
the DeHavilland Caravelle
the Vickers Electra and of course how can we forget
the Boeing VC-10

Why didn't Douglas think of the Tristar name first?

First DC-10 Continental HNL-SFO 6/88. No flights on a TriStar.

HNL used to 3-hole heaven, more like DC-10 heaven since not too many airlines flew the TriStar here.

Zrs70 simply got confused between two terms. The word he was thinking of was trijet.

So is it the tristar L1011 or DC-10?

Mine...

L1011 - SIN-HKG on CX in 1990 (just before enlistment into the army..sniff)
DC-10 - FRA-YYZ on LH in 1983 (those orange seats were terrible on the eyes)...

If the question was meant to be TriStar, my first flight was in the summer of 1983, on Delta from SEA to DFW. For other trijets, my first 727 flight was (I believe) summer of 1971, Braniff from DAL to SEA, and only DC-10 flight was summer of 1976 with United from PHL to ORD. No flights on Trident, MD-11, or TU-154.

My first DC10 flight was on American Airlines, Flight 345, from JFK to Bermuda in June 1983.

My other L1011 flights:

CDG-GVA, TWA July 1988
GVA-CDG, TWA August 1988
ZRH-JFK, TWA August 1989

My other DC10 flights:

My first L1011 flight was with Delta in 1980. We connected from PHX to ATL on a 727 to a L1011 ATL FRA.

I remember the vastness of ATL Hartsfield Airport as an eight year old. The Delta flights were my first flights ever and even then I remember the difference in service compared to today. In-flight service never seemed to end and even as coach passenger we received slippers. I also distinctly remember the large bank of lavatories at the back of the plane. It's amazing what you can remember during childhood.

My second trip on a L1011 was aboard TWA from PHX to JFK, we then connected to my first trip aboard a 747 JFK-FRA. I will never forget the Eero Saarinen terminal. What a spectacular aviation monument, but that's another story.

Thanks for bringing back memories.

My first L1011 flight was a Delta L1011 from ORD to ATL in April of '96.

It was a Saturday morning, and the scheduled aircraft was a 762. I had been dreaming of flying the L1011 since I was 6 years old. I had been making the roundtrip every two weeks for the past 9 months before that, and on my very last trip home from this client, they changed the equipment! Needless to say, I was ecstatic (don't get me wrong, I LOVE the 767 also.) Since it was a slow morning, and I was a Gold Medallion at the time, I got upgraded to first. I was on row 2. I could not believe how massive the first class cabin of the L1011 was.

After that I got to fly L1011s every 2-3 weeks going back and forth to SFO.

I miss that plane. I hope to get on one of the last 727 flights.

My first L1011 was with Air Lanka (now Srilankan) in Oct 1989, CMB - LGW.

All in all I have only traveled on it 4 times.

Loved the plane.

I would rate it my second best aircraft after the A340/330's.

Never been on a DC10 yet!

No confusions, folks... just seeing (once again) who is awake!

1) The Tristar is the L10
2) TWA did not fly the DC10
3) No such airport as HAR
4) TW's VIP club were the Ambassador's Clubs. AA have the Admirals Clubs
5) Neither TW nor AA had/ have VIPS clubs at BDL
6) TW never scheduled a widebody into BDL (to my knowledge)
7) 2-3-3 seating?????? What plane ever had that!
8) BN never had a hub at STL

Having worked for Eastern, I flew on their L-1011's a lot. The first time was probably in 1973, Flight 892 MIA-LGA.
My first DC-10 flight was a local flight on a National DC-10-10 out of PBI in the Spring of 1972. They were offering $25 one hour local flights to promote the airplane. I went with my wife and her niece (her first flight ever) and it was the first time that I ever saw the boundary layer on the leading edge of the wing. I actually saw the light refracted through the boundary layer causing a layer of distortion of the ground below the leading edge.

My first L-1011 flight was in June of 1985 on an ATA charter from JFK to Lisbon. The aircraft was fitted out with the Delta interior (9 abreast) for a total passenger capacity of 344. I remember that the interior looked very 70's with the seats covered in green and gold. The flight was on time and the crew was excellent.

Alas, I have never flown on a Tristar and probably never will.

I have, however, flown on several DC-10s:

My first TriStar flight was on BWIA from POS-BGI on 8 July 1983, nearly 20 years ago. BWee had the planes for 3 years before I made my first flight and I was overjoyed to be on the wide plane, much bigger than the DC9s and 707s I was more familiar with. I really enjoyed that flight and, seeing that I was 9 and very envious of anybody who got to fly on them before myself, it is probably my favourite flight of all time. 1 week later I went on from BGI to JFK (with a stop in ANU), again on TriStar. My last flight on BW's now retired TriStars was on 28 June 2002 from POS-LHR. No DC10 or MD11 flights yet.

First L-1011- Delta SFO-ATL, September 1995. I thought the plane was awesome, but I was afraid of it, considering I had seen "The Ghost of Flight 401" a few weeks earlier & was afraid it would happen again. I don't know the exact reg. #, but remember looking it up & seeing it was one of the ex-EA planes.

First DC-10- Northwest MSP-LAX, October 1992. Don't remember much, except that I was shocked by a cockpit with 3 pilots- hadn't seen that before.

Well My first TriStar flight

Airlanka UL422 CMB-BKK On 4R-ULD L1011-100 Sep 1986. I still remember the excellent poached eggs they served for breakfast on that sunny morning

My last TriStar Flight

Airlanka UL303 SIN-CMB 4R-ULE L1011-1 Aug 1999. Well, the interior was in a very sorry shape. They were just about to get rid of all the Tri Stars. But the service was excellent again.

Never flew a DC-10, MD-11

Airlanka,
